Looks great!!

I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&. "Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."

I hope this film will make me respect Barrymore as an actress.

I already respect Barrymore. She is wonderful. This trailer looks great. I don't have HBO, but I am going to try to be in front of a TV for this!

Edit: just watched another preview for this. Barrymore looks like she is gonna take an Emmy. Just from the clip she looks like she does a stunning job. Both of them do.

"And the Edies were not insane. Eccentric, at best."

Oh, OK.

Eccentric - and living in squalor in an abandoned house (which they almost set on fire) - not to mention the wild animals running in and out, and the bugs that infested the bed Big Edie was confined to.

I hope the people in my life don't relegate me to such an existence and write it off as 'eccentric'.

"You are doing fine on your own."

Well, that's a nice statement, since you know nothing of my life.

My comments are about the known existence of these women, which is documented on film.

And I notice you had nothing to say about that.

re: New Trailer on HBO's website for their GREY GARDENS film!

They really made now qualms about extracting 2 exact quotes from the musical ("dance a soft shoe!" and "I had my cake and ate it")

logan0215... its obvious you've never seen the 1975 documentary as those lines are said in it, hence why they also are used in the recent Broadway musical.

The "I had my cake and ate it" comment by Big Edie is said early in the documentary when she is speaking about her life and how she has no qualms about it.

The "dance a soft shoe" comment by Big Edie is said midway in the documentary when Little Edie is singing along to old recordings of Big Edie (and her accompanist Gould). Little Edie is dancing/moving about as she is singing so Big Edie asks her to "dance a soft shoe" during a musical interlude in the recording.

To those who've never seen the original 1975 documentary by the Maysles... do yourself a favor and seek it out. It'll make you appreciate this HBO so much more, as well as the recent Broadway musical adaptation. The documentary provides a launching platform of information that is brought to life in these 2 incarnations of the women's story.

I didn't think either one of them would pull it off this well. SO excited to see this. Now, I can just relax and focus on the story, and stop "worrying" if they can do the roles.

The answer is a big YES.

Drew in the younger years is starting to look a bit like Julianne Moore! Very impressed with her acting and her "looks" in this trailer.

I love that both actresses seem to be doing a modified version of those "distinctive voices" in the early years. It seems right for them.

Fosse

"It's obvious" you don't know what the **** you're talking about because I've seen the original film multiple times as well as "The Beales of Grey Gardens."

I'm eluding to the fact that those two lines (which are obviously from the film) are directly from the musical as well AND used in the promos. "I had my cake and ate it" is featured so much so in the musical that it has it's own song.

I'm excited by this film but a bit irked by the similarities of the two. Watching the behind the scenes footage, the filmmakers make it sound as if it was their original idea to make a piece that shows the Edies where they were and where they ended up which the musical did first. The musical was already playing off-Broadway while the script for the film was being developed.

It seems that the film actually tries to tell the true early story of these women, rather than the largely fabricated one the musical tells in the first act.

I knew these two would be good, as I trusted their casting, but this truly looks wonderful.

The first act of the musical is not largely fabricated, it is based on all actual events.

It simply condenses them to seem as if they are happening in one day (Mr Beale's shady Mexican divorce, Edies "coming out party" is replaced with her and Joe's engagement and her subsequent departure, Edith's father cuts her off).

What a fitting tribute to two beautiful ladies! And I am in love with the script so far...the dialogue between Jackie and Edie is chilling...

Besides that, they look fatastic and really have their mannerisms down pat!
