For anyone who has never actually been to Times Square for New Years... DON'T GO. I used to live on 51 Street between Broadway and 8 Avenue. For years I avoided the event as it seemed more hassle than worth. Boy was I grossly understating the experience. Times Square on New Years is crowded, cold, wet - and its a disgusting wet as its caused by being endlessly sprayed with sticky cheap champagne or worse, beer. The police are everywhere and won't allow you access to much movement. Basically, you enter a street and are stuck there. Getting around is near impossible, getting out is almost as bad.
I did it once. I will never do it again.

If you work at a bar/restaurant/hotel in the area you better have your employee ID. You will have to show your tickets for a show if you going to the theater. IF you are staying at a hotel have your key card ready to show. If you have restaurant reservations -- good luck depends on which you officer you talk to.

Not Broadway but Big Apple Circus is magical on New Year's Eve, Champagne and all.
