HAHA, I assure you that Spring Awakening will not be winning Best Choreography anytime soon.

Yeah I don't see it winning best choreography but I do see Best Musical, Score, Book, and Featured Actor for John Gallagher Jr.
BOOK? It is stripped from the original play and is too melodramatic. I see Grey Gardens winning best book.
I don't see SA winning Book or Choreography.
It is much easier to see Doug Wright's name and vote for him.
Do you think they'll give the best featured actress in a play to Xanthe Elbrick to counterbalance the fact that "Coram Boy" (unfortunately) will probably not win anything else - and it seems featured actress in a play is the least "locked" (as much as anything can be.)
best actor in a play is, I think, the hardest cateogry this year...
Boyd Gaines, Journey's End
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Brían F. O’Byrne, The Coast of Utopia
Christopher Plummer, Inherit the Wind
Liev Schreiber, Talk Radio
WOW. talk about tough!
I'm assuming Christopher Plummer has won before. I'm kind of leaning toward him.
Frank Langella will win. His only real competition is Liev Schreiber.

I'm sorry but I have to get this out. I'm a big Spring Awakening fan but dear god! This is ridiculous! Best Choreography!? HAH!
Ok, I'm sorry. Back to the subject....
These SA nuts are really starting to get to me. I mean, I don't LOATHE the show, I dont LOVE it either, but people are acting like it's the second coming of Christ. Good Lord! The only things I think it possibly has a win for are:
MUSICAL, SCORE, & LIGHTING. Otherwise, I think folks are DREAMING with a Jonathan Groff and John G. Jr. Wins...those 2 belong to Raul/Micahel & David Pittu!
Darling, I think it is YOU dreaming if you honestly believe that David Pittu will win the Tony.
Well it certainly shouldnt be John G. Jr. His "I wanna be a rockstar" impersenation is dreadfully overrated and grated on my last nerve. I don't think any of the actors nominated has a really good supporting role, but I think Pittu does the best with what he's given and deserved it. So, dreaming or not - its what I believe.
I think Gallagher should win, hands down. The only creature on that stage with depth.
Well he isn't competing against the folks in his play now, he's up aginst 4 other distinguished guys. Brooks A has no chance at all in taking home the award, Christian Borale is playing one of the worst written roles of the year (although he should be commended for playing it decently, but not rewarded), and John Cullum could give that performance in his sleep. I'm sticking with PITTU! He's won the OCC and more than likely will take home the Drama Desk this week as well.
that choreography category is very close...haha like it matters.
He's not competing against the other SA guys?
REALLY?
Are you pulling my leg?
honestly?
PLEASE. CLEARLY.
What I find interesting is that SA is emerging as the clear majority winner and that is with everyone voting only once (I went back after I had voted to see how things were shaping up, and it automatically said 'you have already voted. you may vote only once' or something like that). So clearly, the SA detractors have no basis for whining this time around, like the did for the Broadway.com nominations--the majority of the theatre going populace believe that Spring Awakening deserves to win Best Musical.
I wasn't thrilled with David Pittu's performance. He was fine in a mediocre show, but his voice had a very bizarre nasal quality to it that was jarring to listen to. Also, the material didn't really give him a whole lot to work with. I thought Gallagher rose above his material and created a character people could relate to and feel for in a show that lacked character depth. He really made the role his own and was the highlight of the show. He totally stole the show (in a good way) and I think deserves to be recognized.
Cullum can take it.
it is a lovely performance.

The theatre going populace is just that.
Phantom - longest running show.
Any Sondheim show - off the charts (literally).
"but his voice had a very bizarre nasal quality to it that was jarring to listen to."
Then you should hear Brecht sing!
But I agree. Gallagher should win.

*shrug* what did Cullum DO in the production? To my recollection he sang the beginnings of two songs and watched Audra McDonald sing "Raunchy." Now, he did these things well, but does he deserve a Tony for it?
Uh-oh, I have to admit I am not all too familiar with Brecht (the actual guy, I know of his work). Did he really sound like that?

He was the pipsqueak who got the girls.
If you go to the real.com site you can actually listen to the recording Eric Bentley released of Brecht before the HUAC. It is quite mesmerizing and he is quite funny in a very Brechtian way. The whole thing seems like a scene out of one of his plays - honestly.
There is also a recording - I want to say Kurt Weill's SEPTEMBER SONGS that has a track of Brecht singing "Mack the Knife" and Weill singing "Speak Low." And you will hear how damn close Cerveris is to becoming Weill - in spirit, accent, and sound. And if people would go see the damn show (LOVEMUSIK, that is) and would understand the hurdles Cerveris has successfully leaped, they would understand why he deserves the Tony.
