due in 2007 there will be a new movie musical "Asphalt Beach" starring Kristin Chenoweth and Parker Posey with music and lyrics by Andrew Lipa.
FROM THE SITE: A movie musical in the style of Grease! and Hairspray about two girls (Chenoweth, Posey) whose paths cross at boarding school. They are both at different ends of the social spectrum. Chenoweth plays the popular, spoiled, rich girl.
It sounds like Wicked to me.

Posted: 11/5/06 at 8:43pmThis project has been floating around for two or three years. It has been shelved (most likely permanently.)
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

It's times like this when MovieMusicals.net should be operable...sigh. (This week, though!)
Yes, ASPHALT BEACH has been up in the air for years. Chenoweth detached herself, however a friend informed me recently that she is back onto the film and it's actually going to happen.
Originaly it was to be an indie flick, however that same friend says a major has expressed interest. We'll see...

The movie was shelved because they decided to turn the show into stage musical.
It's currently in the middle of a run at Northwestern University, as part of the American Musical Theatre Project, dedicated to the development and production of new musicals at NU. The cast is mostly NU students, but also stars Carly Jibson, most recently of HAIRSPRAY. It runs through Sunday. I'm going Thursday and will report back after that
