New they were a star!!!!

What show show (and performer) did you see...and leave knowing you saw a star to be?
For me:
Karen Ziemba in the original 42nd St.
Kristin Chenoworth(sp.?)in Steel Peir
Raul Esparza in Rocky Horror
Patti Lupone in the tour of Bakers Wife
Veanne Cox in Company
Allen Cummings in Cabaret

Who else???

I've only felt that way about two performers: Sutton Foster in TMM and Randy Aramando in The Crackwalker at the Terry Schreiber Studios, about 12 years ago. Sutton, everyone already knew about; Randy's dreams never came true. But he had "it" as much as Sutton.

Christine Baranski in "House of Blue Leaves"
Kelsey Grammer in "Othello" (although I thought he was going to be a great Shakespearn actor rather than a sitcom star).
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I knew Raul Esparza was going to change my life forever and was going to be a huge success since I saw him on the Rosie O'Donnell show belting out 'Time Warp'.
There's a light in the darkness of everybody's life.

Not me personally but I think its cool...My best friend and her family saw the "Grease!" tour with Sutton as Sandy and I guess when the lights came up for intermission he turns to my friend and said "she is going to be a star"! :)

Donna Murphy in PASSION, of course! I thought she was the greatest actress I'd ever seen, and, after seeing everything she's done since, I still think that.

Perhaps personal favorite stars "to be" is the right term to this one. Dollypop mentioned a few who are actually known outside of the Broadway community. It's a small world in the theater community, but the real world is much bigger and somewhat oblivious to theater stars, unless they're household names. Here's hoping a few of these will be remebered 2 to 5 years from now.

I saw Kelsey Grammer in OTHELLO and thought he was dreadful. Yes, he had a splendid speaking voice, but Michael Cassio is supposed to be virile and extremely masculine. If the actor playing the role is anything less, Iago's scheme to convince Othello that Desdemona is having an affair with the soldier falls flat. Grammer was not virile or particularly masculine. He had longish hair and at times seemed like a fop. He was woefully miscast in the role--and this was well before he went on to television fame.

Dollypop, that whole production was miscast. Dianne Wiest was a dreadful Desdemona. But just because actors are miscast doesn't mean that people can't see talent in an actor.

He was mesmerizing in a so so show.

Susan Egan in "BABY" (Music Circus in Sacramento)
I could not get the chills out of me when she sang "The Story Goes On"

BO Jon~ Love that song! Just heard Liz Callaway do it in concert here in S. Jersey, then "Medowlark"! That and Norm Lewis's Bu Doi back to back ....WRECKED me!

of course that brings back up my thread about BABY at PMP...hope the libretto has improved!!!

DOLLY, Ms. Engel is about to grace here in the all-"star" anniversary tour of NUNSENSE and all i've seen her in is MTM's sitcom and (briefly) BOYS FROM SYRACUSE at Roundabout. i think she must be playing the ventroliquist...think she has it in her? the other "stars" and who i think they'll be playing:

Kaye Ballard (Mother S)
Darlene Love (Hubert, of course)
Lee Meriweather (Sister Leo, i guess)
which leaves only

Mimi Hines as Robert Anne?!?! seems a stretch, but Georgia would be a further stretch...
Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys. "I guarantee that we'll have tough times. I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life..."

and since i got here prior to the Quibbler, is it really supposed to be "KNEW they were a star"? or is it some kind of pun...
