Next to Normal "Ineligible" For Outer Critics and Drama Desks

We knew that the majority of the show wasn't eligible, but that's too bad for J. Robert Spencer and Louis Hobson. Also, by these rules, does it mean that 9 to 5 will be ineligible as well? Because that would be too bad for them.

9-to-5, SHREK, BILLY ELLIOT, NEXT TO NORMAL, ROCK OF AGES, and HAIR have all received productions prior to transferring to Broadway.

WTF are they going to do??

Also 9 to 5 is definitely eligible. They were in Out of Town Tryouts in LA. Next to Normal was off broadway before so it is eligible.

9-to-5, SHREK, BILLY ELLIOT never had presentations in NY. They're all eligible.

I don't believe the Off-Broadway ROCK OF AGES made the cutoff last year, so it will be eligible, and HAIR will be eligible, too.

esparza 333, Spencer and Hobson will not be eligible because the nominators didn't see the Broadway production by the cutoff.

"The committees for the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle theater awards will not consider the musical ?Next to Normal? for honors this spring, their leaders said on Thursday, because nominators for the two organizations were unable to see the show in time...Drama Desk rules permit reconsidering only a show?s new elements, so the lead male actor in ?Normal,? J. Robert Spencer, would be eligible because he joined the production for its Broadway run, but its lead actress, Alice Ripley, who was also in the Off Broadway run, would not. The producers of ?Next to Normal? had wanted a guarantee that it would be reconsidered in all categories. William Wolf, the president of the Drama Desk, said that he couldn?t agree to that without seeing the show, and that the producers didn?t make that possible until the Wednesday opening. ?Our cutoff date to consider shows is April 19,? he said. "

This article is saying that Spencer and Hobson are ineligible based on timing. The deadline for the nominating committees to see the frozen show (opening night and after) is the 19th. Next to Normal opened last night which led the Drama Desks and Outer Critics to decide that it didn't give their nominating committees enough time to see them.

So as I was saying, that ruling will most likely mean that 9 to 5 is ineligible as well due to timing.

NINE TO FIVE will be eligible. This always happens, the crtics will see a preview.

Alliez92092, Next to Normal is ineligible based on timing because the producers didn't invite the voters to performances before the cut off date. The producers of 9 to 5 no doubt invited the voters to the previews before the April 19th cutoff. The show doesn't have to have opened by the cutoff date to be eligible for OCC and DD awards.

I agree but I think it will be interesting to see who wins. My bets are on Janney but who knows? It will tell us for sure who is Ripley's main competition.
