Very smart marketing move for the best new musical of the season.

I understand that twitter does suggest people that you should follow based on the people that you are already following. Most of the time these people would accept whoever suggests that they follow them (in this case Next To Normal) without giving it much thought.

I know people who do a similar thing with Facebook and when they suggest that they should be friends with someone they accept regardless of if they know the person in real life or not. There are people out there who don't really care who sees their profile and thus say yes.

That being said, I don't think that this is the best way to market the show. I feel as if any show that markets via twitter, facebook etc are not getting anyone new to know about the show. I have a feeling that the "legit followers" those who have seen the show and added them to thier list of follwers on twitter are people who have already seen the show and not new people who are curious about it.

Hell, if I had not seen the show before, I would think that thier tweets were weird and if anything turn me away from seeing the show since they are mostly filled with a lot of inside jokes from the show rather then telling people about what it is in a way that would not get those who haven't seen the show into the booth to see it for the first time.

I do think that it is a good thing that shows are using things like myspace, facebook and twitter as a way to get people to see the show. That is if it is set up in a way that works well. In the case of Next To Normal, I don't think that it is a case that works out well.

Winston-

Next to Normal is being suggested as a user overall. Not based on who anyone is following. If you are a new user, it's on the list of suggested feeds.

And while I understand your logic. I pose the converse that those who have NO clue what the show is about might end up googling or learning more about it BECAUSE they are following them and getting intriguing tweets.

Afterall - isn't a NEW and UNEXPOSED audience something any advertiser is looking for (in addition to repear customers?)

Plenty of theatergoers - rabid or occasional - don't know all the shows or what's playing on Broadway at any given time. Exposure is exposure and if it piques curiousity - it's done its job.

Craig, I think your right that a new and unexposed audience is something that any show is looking for. But, for me it is an issue of demographic. The main demographic of people who use twitter or myspace or facebook are teens to around college age and thereabouts. Now, I do understand that there are older people who use those websites but I am talking about their main demographic.

Now, that being said it is hard to get a teen into theatre and into wanting to see a show unless they already like Broadway. Hell, I can't tell you the number of times I got insulted in high school just because I love theatre.

I guess what I am trying to say is that using twitter or facebook or whatever does seem like a good idea on paper. But, the majority of people who use those websites are teenagers. And, I feel that teen theatregoing is a niche audience, meaning that if your not already into theatre then it is going to be something that your not going to be interested.
