Posted: 7/6/09 at 9:10amI was just watching clips of Candide and Camelot and realized that there was no Philharmonic musical this year. Was there a reason for this or did one happen and I totally missed it?

dolly: are you sure about that? i have a vague recollection that Camelot was offered as part of 07/08 subscription series in the summer of 07 ...
(but, lord, that was long ago -- i'm lucky in can remember what i had for dinner last night!)
in any case, i think part of the explanation lies in the leadership change going on at the Phil. lorin maazel just wrapped up his seventh and last season as conductor (and music director) in june, and he chose to program some massive choral works (britten's "war requiem" and mahler's "symphony of a thousand"), likely instead of a concert or semi-staged musical production.
the new director, alan gilbert, has chosen to conduct a semi-staged opera (ligeti's modern "le grand macabre") next may, again likely instead of the "traditional" semi-staged or concert musical.
but, per dolly's comment, the announcement of a musical as special programming -- either at avery fisher or elsewhere -- always could come at a later date.

Thanks, everyone!
PS; I enjoyed Camelot! It could have been better, but I had a great time watching it.
