A group of my friends watched the movie last night, and when I tell you, we roared with laughter for the entire 85 minutes. I havent laughted so hard since I saw "The 39 Steps" back in september, in Boston.

Do other people feel as strongly about this movie as we all did?

I rather like it. It's not as fun as the stage show (well, I've seen a fair amount of bad versions of the stage show), but the cast is great and it still is a funny movie overall.

I thought it was extremely funny, though I did see the movie before ever seeing the stage play. I can't even remember it being released to theatres though. Still, I have a huge crush on Carol Burnett so anything she does, I'm there!

Its far from the best adaption of a play to film. It works brillantly in the theatre if its a good production with a live audience, but is lost in the cinema.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

The cast of this movie said that after rehearsing onstage for several weeks, they themselves felt odd and let down when the cameras came in. I think that feeling translates. This is just one of those (brilliant, spectacular) plays that should have remained a play--you really need to be in the theatre, getting the real sense of a live performance going wrong. Something in the movie medium works against the material (you know, subconsciously, that in a movie what doesn't work is just edited out.) This is probably the best movie that could have been made from the play, though, and it is cast beautifully.

I agree with Roquat. The film was cast impeccably, and it actually would have been a lot of fun to see all of them in a stage production. However, by no fault of their own, the film just doesn't work as well, for the simple fact that the medium works against it. There is no sense of urgency or immediacy to a film version of this play, which derives a lot of its humor from the "live performance" aspect. The slapstick and physical humor just doesn't work as well, or come off as spontaneous, because the cameras telegraph it.

The World premier was at Londons Savoy theatre. Dotty Otly was origininated by Patricia Routledge, better know as Hyacinth Bucket in BBCs 'Keeping Up Appearances'

My high school did a production of it. then I saw it at Papermill, then I saw the revival on broadway. I have to say that my high school did the best production.

but the movie is great. fantastic cast, including two incredible actors that have passes on before their time (Christopher Reeve and John Ritter.)

I have to ask the person who posted how they found 39 Steps to be hysterical. I just saw it and the only best parts of the show were the stage directions and the two actors who played basically every part. Other than that, it was nothing compared to what I read and also nothing compare to the show I saw earlier today, Is He Dead. Now that is a hysterical play.

The movie isn't nearly as good as it could have been.

The play is hilarious.

I totally agree with roquat - it works much better on stage than on film, but it had a terrific cast and I think they did the most they could with the movie. I enjoy the film a lot.

I enjoy the film in that it reminds me how much I loved the show!

Whenever I need a good laugh, and since the show isn't around, the movie works just fine for me and my friends.

Well, I thought Carol Burnett and John Ritter were a scream. Of course, opinions differ.

It plays like a better than average tv-movie, in my opinion, with a weird (yet strangely competent) cast.

I love the play. Truly. One of my favorite Brit farces.

The movie. Lost a lot in translation, I thought. I probably would never watch it again. I saw the revival a few years back, and really was entertained.
