Non AEA at AEA call

Hi folks,
I have to ask because everyone always talks about this and I've never understood how it worked. How do non equity members get seen at equity calls? Someone told me they check in early, stand around all day, and hope for the best. However, sometimes I see calls with "will see only the first 200" and I've always wondered how Non AEA's even get in there.

Would someone please be so kind as to explain it to me, so I may not wallow in ignorance any longer
