I haven't seen Hamilton yet, and maybe I'm just out of touch or whatever, but I have exactly no desire to see a rap musical. Just none, none at all. There's no way I'm paying money to see that show, especially at the prices you currently have to pay to get in.

yes pinto, you are the champion of the flops and enemy of the successful. great strategy. And maybe just maybe those of you judging the music without hearing it ought to consider how many people who have gone into the show saying they don't like rap music have come out saying they absolutely loved the way it was artfully integrated into the score, enriching the whole immeasurably. The audiences I saw this show with were not the natural demographic for hip hop. But if you prefer, just skip it and go watch infinite loops of Honeymoon in Vegas at the library.

I am seeing Hamilton in September. What happens to me if I don't like it? I mean, I feel like it's being overhyped. What if it just isn't that good? Will I be lynched? If that happens, promise me please that Jason Robert Brown writes a show about me and my struggle to formulate my own opinions on musical theater, and how that lead to my ultimate demise. I would like to be portrayed by any of the hefty also rans from RuPaul's Drag Race, thankyouverymuch. I bet it will be the best new show in several centuries.

Jayar, I hope you get your 15 minutes but I also hope you like the show. But if you don't I'll respect that: it's yours to like or not after you see it. I don't think you'll be harmed, unless Pinto falls in love with the show and takes off his heels and impales you with them. But beyond that, I'm sure you can appreciate that individual opinions do not determine a show's legacy: it's the collective judgment. There are plenty of much-loved shows I don't like.

I agree with the many other posters who have said that, if you have not yet seen Hamilton, you can not possibly understand or appreciate what an entirely different stratosphere this show is in than your run of the mill good/great shows that are nominated year in, year out. I personally loved HAMILTON so much after seeing it at The Public that I have bought tickets again to see it with friends in September and tickets to see it for a third time with my boyfriend for his birthday - so clearly, I think there is a lot to love - and out of the hundreds of shows I have seen, I can count on one hand the shows I cared to see more than once. I think Hamilton is something that can be appreciated by anyone - whether rap is your thing or not (it actually encompasses many styles of music besides rap - jazz, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, traditional broadway ballads, british pop - even if the rap is what it is most "known" for). The creativity of the piece and the unbelievably integral choreography that is melded to the action is worth the price of a ticket alone. I expect Hamilton to sweep the Tony awards - and rightfully so. I'd expect Mr. Manuel will win the Pulitzer as well. Truly, I've yet to meet a person who has actually seen the show who does not feel this way. Rob136 and _IrisTinkerbell, I think to term this show a "rap musical" actually sells it incredibly short - it is truly so very much more. Lots of people who don't even like rap have loved this show. Maybe our collective passion and enthusiasm will make you at least a little bit curious what more there is to it? Jayar2, I truly hope you like the show but it will be perfectly fine if you don't - but even if you don't - I believe there will be thousands of thousands of people who become theater fans for life because they were exposed to this show - and I think we can all agree that is an absolutely wonderful thing.

Well, I did say I was curious, didn't I? I definitely am. And since moving here I've seen a LOT of theater. In 3 months I've seen all the new musicals that were still around, some of which I was more excited about going in, and some less so. Some I loved, some I didn't. Some surprised me in a good way (like Honeymoon, I had NOT been impressed with what I had seen of the show before and was not very excited about the story matter). But I could get relatively cheap tickets for all of them, so I don't mind taking risks and possibly seeing something I'm not crazy or terribly excited about. With Hamilton, I would totally go see it for like $30-$40 rush/lottery. But you can probably understand that I won't pay $150 or something on a show I'm not sure I will like. I'm only gonna spend that if I'm SURE I'll have an amazing night and will see something I LOVE. But I doubt cheap tickets for Hamilton will be around... unless they keep doing an online lottery once they are on Broadway. In which case I will enter and maybe eventually see it.

Are you serious? If Fun Home doesn't win its endlessly deserved Tony, it's going to have nothing to do with which show is better and everything to do with which show is more obviously commercial. I can't believe many of us have been members of this board for well over a goddamned DECADE and regular theatregoers for far, far, FAR longer and we're still having this discussion like it's a brand new notion.
The only thing I can agree with here is that, yeah, Hamilton has a ton of -- and more importantly, a different kind of -- momentum, but that yes, nothing is sure. Although I think at this point people are willing to hand Lin awards just for waking up.
And yeah, I got one bad haircut once so I never went to another salon ever again.
My God. Some things never change.

What is even being discussed in this thread??? Folks. Art is subjective and nothing can be "right" or "wrong." If this entire argument is about what musical is the 'best' according to the standards established by the American Theatre Wing, then your answer will be provided on Sunday. Only a few days away. This conversation is a moot point until then. Cheers.

Both threads (flops & hits) prove not everyone will like a specific show and people like what others do not
Did not hate Fun. It was a show with a message. I got it but the show did not do it for me. The acting was fine and the score fit the story. It simply did not do it for us. I am glad people liked it and champion it. Ditto for AAIP.I just enjoyed others more.
I prefer Rotten. If it does not win, life goes on and I will survive.I will congratulate Fun or AAIP and move on
