I would miss GYPSY more if I hadn't seen it. Since I did get to see it, though, I can go on living with the memories of that AWESOME night. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best thing I've ever bought myself.
And I was never crazy about SPRING AWAKENING. I liked the album, but it was never something I HAD to see. I would never have forgiven myself if I had missed GYPSY.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 2:44pmI think I'm the only person who didn't swoon over Spring Awakening. I'm not trying to cut it down or anything, but I still don't understand how it won Best Choreography over Mary Poppins. But to get back on point with this thread, Gypsy is a great show. Sondheim's lyrics and Styne's Music are just amazing.

"No matter how many revivals come after it, nothing can top this cast and the performances they gave."
This is how I felt after seeing the original production in 1959, 1960, and 1961. As it turned out, my thoughts held up over the years, although I love GYPSY so much that I have enjoyed every production except for the Sam Mendes one. But nothing ever topped the original.

Didn't Carol Channing reveal that she's part black? So she could still play one of the strippers in our fantasy all-black version.
With or without Carol, I'd love to see Lillias take on Rose.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 4:07pmSo glad to hear I'm not the only one who misses GYPSY! I also keep playing the score all week. And I wish La Grande Patti would at least write a Ramblings from the Road on her blog again too. I need some kind of a Patti fix.

Yes, I genuinely miss Gypsy. The five times I saw the show were such fantastic experiences for me that I'm so happy to have had.
And yeah, the cast recording has definitely been playing repeatedly.

I miss GYPSY. A lot.
Also, Norm Lewis as Herbie* would absolutely rock my socks. Kudos to whoever suggested that.
*I initially typed "Norm Lewis as Boyd Gaines." Oops.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 6:16pmThe all-black Gypsy idea is really awesome. And Jennyish... I agree totally-- both about Norm Lewis as Herbie and about momentarily thinking of the character as 'Boyd Gaines.'
