An opportunity has come up to fit an extra show in -here's the catch.. Do i go see A Touch Of The Poet or Sweeney for the second time?...I love heavy drama(doubt x2,glengarry,virginia woolf, topdog underdog, the pillowman --an idea of what i have seen so far..I'm a huge fan of Tennessee Williams, Tony Kushner and O'neill. As far as he goes, I have read works of his,but have never seen any of his performed although its a goal. I loved Sweeney the first time and knew i'd see it again..but I am just not sure because theres other stuff out there i want to see. pros or cons? Updated On: 1/16/06 at 12:46 AM

SWEENEY is an oustadning musical but since you only have a limited time see POET.

I always encourage people to see as many different shows as possible.

It disappoints me that so many people here just go back and see the same show over and over. I am NEVER impressed when someone posts "I've seen WICKED 37 times!" WHAT could anyone possibly gain from that many vieweings of the one show???

POET isn't staged all that often, but SWEENEY is done frequently. Even in New York the original ran 1979-80, New York City opera staged it in 1984 and 1986. Circle-in-the-Square did a Broadway revicval (dubbd TEEENY TODD) in 1989-90. NYCO brought it back last season, ad now this new production.

Also I often find that while a second visit will allow you to pick up on details that you may have missed the first time, your memory of the first time you see a show will always be the strongest.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Yeah, I absolutely love Sweeney as property and this recent production as well. However, i love to see as much as possible and maximize my time whenever i can get to NYC..there are only a couple shows I have seen more than once with three times being the most...valid point you made with how often revivals have been staged for one and not the other..just curious, have you seen POET?

Sadly -- no.

But I've seen SWEENEY and adored it. But if given the choice between the two, I'd take POET. Don't miss it while you have the chance to see it. That would be silly!
