Hey everyone- I have a few questions, that I'm sure some of you guys might know.
First is, did the enchanted rose in Beauty and the Beast, (the original production of it on Broadway,) have petals that fell? Or was it simply swapped out during intermission and scene changes to show the petals falling?
Also, does anyone know exactly how many petals fall from the rose, and if the number of petals is relevant or imperative to the story?
And lastly, I remember that when my High School put on a production of B&B, I remember hearing they had to buy the magic tricks from Disney. Does anyone know if every single production has to have the magic in it? And if you do indeed buy the rights and royalties to do the show, is the magic included, or do you have to pay extra to learn the magic? Thanks so much!!

Magic?

Apparently, when you buy the rights from Disney, they make you sign a lengthy contract to do the "magic." It included the Beast's transformation, the rose and a few other "magical things."
Obviously not every single production has to incorporate the expensive special effects. You don't have to buy them from Disney (I don't even know that you can) and they're not included in the licensing fee. I don't believe the number of petals that fall has anything to do with the story other than the script calling for three or four of them to fall at key points in the show. The ones I remember are during "How Long Must This Go On?" and another right before the transformation, of course. There are also companies that offer to rent the "magic" rose and mirror for other regional theatres to use.

Having seen the Walnut Street's production a few years back, I recall that as long as they followed the other legailities as per Disney, they had the freedom to create their own "magic" for the rose, the mirror and the transformation special effects.
