I know that a decision was made long ago not to record THIS cast of "Billy Elliott" -

Assuming that holds true, this will be the first time I can remember that the Tony-Awarding winning new musical doesn't have an OBCR. Any know which show was the last to go unrecorded after winning the Tony??

Sunset Boulevard (1995) and Phantom of the Opera (198re: OBCR of Best New Musical are the only two in recent memory - both transfers from London like Billy.

Thanks boyfromoz -- interesting though, both Sunset and Phantom had PRIMARILY the same casts. In Billy's case, Gwynne is the only transfer, right?

SUNSET BLVD had a cast album made in L.A. with Glenn Close and most of the cast that opened on Broadway. I would say that counts.

KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN only had the London cast album fomr RCA Victor with the original stars, but when Vanessa Williamns took over the lead, Mercury issued a 2nd CD with the replacement Broadway cast covering more of the score and quite a bit of the dialogue. Sadly the 2nd CD didn't sell anywhere near as well as the London cast (which had had the Tony winners Chita Rivera and Brent Carver) and was subsequently deleted.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Isn't the only major player missing from the Sunset recording Alice Ripley?

Yes, The LA Betty did not make the transfer to NY, and Alice took over at the Minskoff.
