...isn't there a Best Original Song award at the Tonys? This seems like such a natural to me. Tony experts...what's the scoop? Has it ever even been considered?

If the Tony people wanted to add another award, it seems to me that an ensemble award would be much more meaningful than a single song award, especially since a Best Song wouldn't get played on the radio anyway. But a top ensemble is what every show should have and it gives everyone a chance for a spot in the sun, even if it's just five seconds on stage standing behind whoever's been picked as the spokesperson (the person who won the Gypsy Robe, if it's a musical?).

Not every show has an ensemble.

But both plays AND musicals have sound design.

They used to have a Best Musical Director (or was it conductor?) years ago. I wonder why they got rid of it?

Cappies (like high school Tonys) has an ensemble award, and it's not just for your typical ensemble. It can be any group that doesn't include the lead or the entire cast. IE the Spellers from Spelling Bee would be a great one, or the Doo Wop girls as well, even though they aren't really your ensemble by the book. I think Best Song is included in best score, no?
