Does anyone know why they might be doing this? It just seems a bit odd.

Probably a cost cutting measure. It's cheaper to do 7 shows a week than 8. They're struggling at the box office with less that 50% attendance most weeks and are advertising "final weeks."
Also, through previews, they switched off doing 7 show weeks and 8 show weeks. It's a HARD show to do (three hours) so perhaps they're just easing the burden on the cast.

I thought they had that structure in place from the very beginning though. Maybe they're just advertising it now so as people are aware that every other week they don't have a Tuesday night show? Plus, the show needs all the attention it can get.
