A pretty friggin sweet promotion if you ask me.
I wasn't going to pay full or even half price to go see Toxic Avenger, but I'll go for $20 bucks, and now I can also finally justify seeing Fuerza Bruta.

I take it you guys DIDN'T enjoy.
Was it the performers, the music the book, what?
And what should two shows should I see during 20 at 20
The thing with Toxic Avenger is that the humor isn't for everyone. Gross out and a little raunchy. It's not poorly written or poorly performed. Nancy Opel is fabulous as three different characters in the show and much kudos to the actors who play White Dude and Black Dude. Playing close to 100 different characters and having them all be truly different is a bear of a task. Not to mention the quick changes they need to pull off.
I laughed at some of the jokes but just rolled my eyes at others. I think the best way to describe the type of humor is "thirteen year old boy". Gross outs, sex jokes, etc. This isn't the type of show you take your mom to.
Is it Pulitzer Prize winning material? No. Is it goofy fun for 90 minutes. Absolutely.
See I REALLY enjoyed Nancy Opel and Sara Chase. But the rest of the cast was terrible.

Tell that to the guys who play Man 1 and Man 2 in 39 Steps. They pull it off marvelously. White Dude and Black Dude in Toxic are just dumb. I never laughed at them (except for when they were playing Sara Chase's character's friends for all 3 minutes). I disagree with Eris in that I find it to be terribly written. The jokes that are funny are ONLY funny because Nancy and Sara know how to make the best of awful material. Also the direction is atrocious.

The Toxic Avenger is not for everyone, but the cast is definitely worth seeing. It's still getting good reviews. Here's a recent one from this week from Theatermania.

I thought the Toxic Avenger was so much fun for just..a fun time at the theatre. That's if you don't mind/like blind jokes, ripping body parts, some bad language, and some not-to-good but campy songs. But I could definitely see how people dislike it (I really liked it!)

I enjoyed Toxic Avenger a lot...I didn't pay to see it but I wouldn't have been upset if I had paid $20. It's raunchy, gross-out humor and it's definitely not for everyone but it's worth it just to see Nancy Opel being fantastic.
Other than that, I'd recommend The Marvelous Wonderettes and The Fantasticks if you haven't seen it already.

I've seen it twice. It's flat-out hilarious. I saw 39 Steps and thought it was awful and boring. To each their own.
Altar Boyz for anyone who hasn't seen it

Toxic Avenger was hysterical. Great, great cast. Altar Boyz is fun too. 20 bucks! So worth it and if you get to the theater about 7:30 you will get tickets.
