"Margo Channing" writes: "What matters is that you are every bit as closed-minded and incapable of evaluating a production on its own merits as the rest of the hacks out there. You went on record early as not liking the casting in this production before you'd even seen it and apparently there isn't a crowbar big enough to open your narrow mind on this matter. Just because your screen name is "Kindness of Strangers" doesn't mean your opinions have any credibility or validity whatsoever vis-a-vis Williams. "
Blah, blah, blah...sigh...Just because you appropriated the name of a "great star" doesn't mean that YOUR imperious opinion has any validity. And anyone who mistakes critics being rightfully horrified by egocentric miscasting for not being open-minded to a new interpretation should just stay at home and watch telly. You really are desperate to validate your diversive take on this show, you silly thing.
"I'll thank you to refrain from attacking me in the future. More than that, why not just block me since everything I have to say seems to be "rubbish" in your eyes. Given your closed mind, nasty attitude and misguided ill-informed opinions, you clearly know from trash. "
Grand idea, grande dame, as I find you QUITE the bore and I have anything BUT a closed mind. I just know miscasting when I smell it.

"houldn't talented artists be allowed to find their own way into this material without being panned for not being enough like the movie?'
If you really think that statement is rubbish, then you have no knowledge, love or respect for the theatre."
Actually, I shouldn't have copied that part in my original post, as it's the one thing the old biddy said that makes sense, although it has no relevance in the miscasting of John C. Reilly as Stanley.

Posted: 4/27/05 at 6:59pmI've already confessed I haven't yet seen the show. I probably will, but with so many reviews that echo what I've predicted, it's not on my short list. I really do love the play. It's among my very favourites and I could probably recite it from memory. Still, the producers could have cast Stephen Hawking as Stanley and it wouldn't have been as doomed from the get-go.

I just saw it this evening, and have to say that I think all of RobbieJ's posts are accurate.
Natasha Richardson's performance was so honest, and emotional. I was captivated by it. I am astounded at the negative reactions people are having to her.
I applaud the fact that there is no overt sexual chemistry between Stanley and Blanche throughout the show. Their contempt for eachother is what makes the final rape so much more powerful.
I think this production's interpretation of the characters and their pivotal scenes is inspired.
