oh jeez this was just insane for all the right reasons. and um....surprise Alex Timbers directed it!
So the show is essentially a play where George and Gil (nick kroll and John Mulaneys characters) play somewhat exaggerated versions of themselves as they find out their rent controlled apartment is no longer rent controlled and they have to figure out a way to raise $4000 before they get evicted, what follows involves the show Shark Tank, Steely Dan, 700 Sundays, One sided phone calls, mispronunciations, an intern who keeps ****ing up lighting cues, cuh-cane, and of course too much tuna.
The show while having a clear story and is ultimately a weird love letter and deconstruction of Neil Simon/Sam Shepherd/David Mamet plays does go on a bunch of weird tangents, and lots of improv is involved (Kroll broke several times during the show), they also reprise the Too Much Tuna prank sketch from Kroll Show with a celebrity guest (tonight it was Mike Birbiglia, last night was apparently Aziz Ansari). And a girl from the audience gets picked out to assist as a third character who is onstage for a good chunk of the ending. And they end with a press conference in character where people can ask questions. I was super impressed with the actual physical production, lots of lighting design and music cues and some props. All in all it was hysterical even if it did almost run an hour and fifty minutes without an intermission.
The run is super sold out, HOWEVER! They are doing a standby line and from what I've been told this may move to midtown in the spring if the right space becomes available. Surprisingly good merch, 3 different shirts for $20 and a poster signed by Gil & George for $10. Nick and John came out about 1/2 an hour after, and were nice enough to sign and take photos, but keep in mind they sign the "tuna bills" as George and Gil.

Oh I really hope this transfers somewhere. I would love to see it
Thanks for your thoughts, LightsOut. I'm hoping for a midtown transfer because Oh, Hello is my favorite part of The Kroll Show and I was super bummed to miss out on this. Maybe I'll try for the cancellation line. How much were the original tickets?
If you pay attention, tickets keep opening up. Right after LightsOut posted this last night, I checked and there was 4 tickets available for tonight, etc. So, they are regularly releasing house seats...

Don't post that! You'll wake up all the people who freak out whenever a short show charges more than a dollar a minute!

I know, right! Because it's totally about dollars spent correlating with time in the theater -- nothing else matters! (Insert LOL here)

wow this just got a absurdly insanely good rave from Ben Brantley, you could do a broadway transfer off of some of the pull quotes in these reviews. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/11/theater/review-in-oh-hello-sour-and-crotchety-old-men-at-their-best.html?_r=0
