I know that "Spamalot" has been getting so much press... BUT... revisited "DRS" yesterday, and in my opinion, there is no comparison. "DRS" is so much better !!!
Why? Well, for starters... for as funny as its expected and said to be, there is not one scene in "Spam" that is as funny as "All About Ruprecht" OR "Love is My Legs".
There is no performance in "Spam" that equals the performance of Norbert Leo Butz' in "Drs" (or Sherie Rene Scott's for that matter)... and because of Mr. Butz, there is no number in "Spam" that comes close to "Great Big Stuff".
I have a feeling that "Spam" wins the Tony, but not for my money !!

Posted: 4/16/05 at 11:27pmI disagree. I liked both a lot, but DRS had a few songs I didn't like and were not necessary, whereas Spamalot's songs I all liked (some more than others). I also think Spamalot has mroe going for it performance-wise, with Tim, David, Hank, Sara, Christian, Christopher, whereas DRS really only has Norbert, John, Sherie, and Gleason IMO.

I haven't seen Spamalot so can't fairly compare the two shows ... but TheGalsSilent, I just have to say, I am admiring you more and more. :)
What's the most anyone here has seen DRS? I would LOVE to see it again!!

Posted: 4/16/05 at 11:42pmI've seen DRS twice and will go back again, I saw Spamalot once and that was more than enough.

Posted: 4/16/05 at 11:45pmHaven't seen either yet. But happen to have tickets for both on the same day. (Spam-Mat, DRS-evening) :)

Posted: 4/17/05 at 12:28amI saw DRS 3 times-twice in previews and once after it opened. The most interesting thing was that it was slightly different each time. The first time was their second preview so it was the full 3 hour original. The second time they had done most of the major changes--cutting dialogue, tightening up the opening number. And the third time was after opening so it was frozen. This is my second favorite show (after Ave Q) and though I havent seen Spamalot yet (I have tickets for May), I'm not a Monty Python fan and from everything I've read about it, I can't imagine liking it more than DRS. But I'll withold final judgement til I do :)

I have seen DRS twice now and absolutly love it. I saw Spamalot on a Saturday and DRS the next Tuesday and couldn't wait to go back to DRS, I won the lottery last night! I have no desire to see Spamalot again.
I think that DRS works so much better than Spamalot, especially in that it does some of the same tweaking of musical theatre styles without being stupid about it (Laker Girls? "I am alone"?)
The performances in Spamalot didn't do anything for me in comparison either, Joanna Gleason was at least equal to Sara Ramierez, as Jbara to Borle or Siebler, I thought Curry was completly misused, and Azaria/Hyde Pierce were good but not as good as Sherie Rene Scott.
Norbert was a thousand times better alone than anything in Spamalot.
All of this from an avid Python fan who loves Holy Grail.
I'll still buy the Cast Recording, but a return visit to the show is close to "only if you pay me."

I liked DRS far more, too.

Posted: 4/17/05 at 1:18amI definitely love both of them. Without a doubt it's going to be up for Best Musical...and if it loses, I think it would only be to Spamalot. Not sure which one I'd vote for. I wasn't looking forward to DRS but ended up loving it though. Same with Spamalot though...and loved it too.

I was listening to the music for Spamalot.
It's fun, but nothing much more. I love David Yazbek!
And yes, Jbara nad Butz are amazing...as is Gleason

Posted: 4/17/05 at 1:39amGleason cracked all the time when I saw the show...but I loved her anyway. Butz was phenomenal...he needs that Tony...SO much better than when I saw him in Wicked. This role was made for him.

Posted: 4/17/05 at 1:44amJust food for thought....wasn't Wicked supposed to win the Tony last year? I hope DRS does win--it's just a better show. However, die-hard Python fans will probably disagree & enjoy Spamalot more.

The lottery at DRS was really easy on Friday night, there were maybe two couples that did not get tickets, it is usually a bit more crowded but, of the ones I have done, it is by far the easiest.
Ave Q, Wicked, Rent, DRS are the ones we have tried. We won Q twice and have won all but Rent, including the last three in a row, I'm happy about my little streak :) Had to gloat, I think going down all the time to try the lotteries is among my favorite things about living in the city.

I have awful luck with lotteries, I just won my first one last month and it was to Rent on an added Wednesday night performance. :)
My friends are generally really lucky though...the girl I'm going with won wicked on 1/9...so maybe we'll get in :)

Posted: 4/17/05 at 2:20amSaw both spamalot and DRS. Thought both were good, but neither led up to the expectations that I had set. Between the two, I honestly thought that Spamalot was superior. DRS just wasn't as fantastic as I had anticipated, and Spamalot was simply enjoyable.

Yes, because "Spam" needs the ensemble cast, which is why I feel that there is not one front and center, standout performance in "Spam".
