Wellll... I registered for the Camp Broadway Master Class, and now I'm kind of regretting it because I really don't think I' experienced enough for it. But I'm going to do my best... It says on the first day there is a placement where you have to dance, sing two songs(an uptempo and a ballad in your key) and do a monologue(they gave us choices)
I've never done a monologue before. Any advice on how I should approach it or how it should be done? I have an idea, but I'm not too sure.
Any advice on songs that a 15 year old girl could sing? I don't care the key or anything, just throw them out there if you can think of anything good, because I can have my coach help me out with the technicals.
Thank you in advance for any help/advice :o)
What is Broadway? A street? Some say it's a street. Some say it is the best street in the world. Others think its terrible. That's the beauty of it, it's terribly beautiful. Some hate it and don't know why. Others love it and don't know why. That's what makes it so wonderful, it's a mystery.
It starts on August 1, and I just got all of this information about 10 minutes ago.

Well I have a lot of singing experience, I'm most experienced in the singing actually. I am just completely blanking on songs that would be good. I obviously don't want to do something from Wicked, but I don't know of many shows that aren't really modern. So I guess I'm asking for any ideas of good female songs that aren't really cliche...?

since they gave you the monologues, you won't be that far behind more experienced actors as you would be if actors were allowed to do monologues they have actually performed alot in front of an audience.
being given a set of monos to choose from is barely a step above a cold reading. Pick the one you like best and have someone help you w/ it.

"The Secret Garden", "The Fantastiks" and "Carnival" have songs for young girls.
I Know Things Now from Into the Woods
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Thanks. Uh, I'm probably somewhat of a mezzo-alto type.

My suggestion is to read the play from which the monolouge you choose is from. It helps so much to understand the character if you know what the are/were/might be going through. Try to pick one that is most like you. It might be hard but the more you can relate to the character the better it will be! Break a leg!:)
(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."
DO NOT DO LIFE OF THE PARTY. I was just in a class where a well-connected audition accompanist got an 18 yr old girl to remove it from her book. Casting Dirs. hate young girls singing "I'm a whore" songs.
And it IS becoming an overdone audition song.

Bewitched is an Older woman/younger man torch song. again not appropriate for a young girl. The "sweet 17" is refering to her distant past, not her future.
I’ve sinned a lot, I’m mean a lot But I’m like sweet seventeen a lot Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am i
I’ll sing to him, each spring to him And worship the trousers that cling to him Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am i
When he talks, he is seeking Words to get, off his chest Horizontally speaking, he’s at his very best
Vexed again, perplexed again Thank god, I can be oversexed again Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am i

For easy-ish to learn, my chorus teacher alwasy suggests Rodgers and Hammerstein stuff. Do you want an upbeat or a ballad?
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
If you can sing low there is a lot of Soundheim stuff out there if you are more confident in your singing. It's not stuff a lot of girls can sing because of the range.
Nonono...don't sing Sondheim. Unless MAYBE it's from Into the Woods. Most of the material is considered much too mature to use for auditions. Even CCM discourages Sondheim music. Not that it's bad, just that it's...not easy to pull off.
What about Goodmorning Baltimore? That's pretty up-beat, and age appropriate. For a ballad (I know it's a guy's song, but it's not really gender-specific) what about Corner of the Sky from Pippin? I've always loved that song, and it's about being young and hopeful (kind of)... I think it seems appropriate...
I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.
Thank you so much everyone. CurtainUp, I need an upbeat one and a ballad.

For a ballad, (and I hate to bring up ALW). How abut "Whistle Down the Wind"?
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

So, I decided on HOME for my ballad. But I'm still having trouble thinking of a good upbeat song. We are going to be working with these songs all week also. Any more suggestions? Thank youu :o)

Mr. Snow is a pretty adorable mezzo upbeat, it's one of Carrie's numbers from "Carousel"
