I searched but there wasn't exactly the thread I wanted so..
I used to reall not like this show. I don't know why, but I never liked sitting through the film, or listening to the CD, and I remember seeing the revival and loving it, but I never revisited because it didn't impress me THAT much. But lately I have fallen in love with Oklahoma. Everyone I talk to doesn't even want to hear it's name spoken. Which is sad. Is anyone else with me that this is, in actuality, a wonderful show?

Posted: 6/13/07 at 11:49pmI hated this show with a bloody passion, disliked the revival for the most part... then I was assigned laurie in a few scenes (i am not a soprano..im a belter) so I had to work my ass off to prepare for this.. but, getting into these characters I really did "fall" in love with a show I never really enjoyed. I think I saw the beauty of it once I had to put work into doing something from it.

Posted: 6/13/07 at 11:51pmI used to think I was the only person on the planet who actually liked this show. I thought the revival was gorgeous. Yes, it's dated and cheesy, but it's a classic. Love it.

Actually, that is exactly how it turned out for me. We were doing a dance for "People Will Say We're In Love" in my studio the other week for the recital, and it just got me so into the spirit, I think.
EDIT: I just saw Emcee's post. And I agree

Initially, I only knew the film version of the musical and was not as impressed with it as I was with Carousel and other Rodgers and Hammerstein shows.
But I saw the Royal National Theatre revival by Trevor Nunn in London, only because I was an R&H fan (I didn't know any of the leads, even if I thought the actor who played Curly had a commanding stage presence and an amazing musical theatre voice) ...never thinking that it would become one of my two favourite R&H shows eventually
I think I'm fast wearing out my DVD of the Hugh Jackman version

Interesting this comes up as my local PBS is running "Broadway: The American Musical" and I watched the section on Oklahoma! last night. This show basically invented the Broadway book musical as we know them today and the innovations were numerous. For its place in history for a art form we love it should be revered as is "Citizen Kane" is for cinema buffs and "Sgt. Pepper" is for rock fans.
IMHO the show still translates well today. The tunes are catchy and everyone knows them, the choreography is still fresh and the dream sequence is the single best dance scene in Broadway history, and the characters are deep and the players love getting into the roles.

Posted: 6/14/07 at 10:13amIt's one of those shows that takes a Trevor Nunn to revitalize it, but IMHO it stills needs a bit more dusting. The licensed orchestrations are painful at points, and the song pacings are so dictated by the original that it's no wonder people listen and think WTF? There's a great musical under all the decades of abuse, but it needs a serious shine up job to get there.
