Posted: 11/18/03 at 5:04pmcan they do that by equity or iatse rules? i thought that once they opened they had to give unions one week's notice or pay them for those shows.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 5:04pmAnd my Thanksgiving plans are dwindling away. I had tickets to this next Wednesday and Bobbi Boland that Thursday. The Telecharge refund department is going to get tired of me at this rate.

Wow. It wasn't that bad... 'course, it wasn't that great, either.
Oh, well. Maybe La Burstyn will have a better vehicle next time.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 7:19pmCan someone explain something to me?...Do the critics have that much power to close down a show after one performance?....It ran a long time in San Diego.....Can't the producers see that a show is not going to make it on Broadway?...I don't understand...All that money and talent, just gone!!!!!!

Posted: 11/18/03 at 7:45pmStrange, "Six Dance Lessons..." played to 30.9% last week and it still going. "Oldest Living Confederate..." played to 33.1% and closes after one night. Both had about $78,000 in grosses.

I hate to say it, but this always did seem a dubious prospect. Perhaps at the Promenade or other off-b'way house. But Burstyn alone playing a woman in a nursing home, even though based on a much loved book, seemed to a rarified evening in today's B'way climate.
I love Burstyn. I wish she'd turn up iin something worthy of her, i.e. like when Elaine Stritch took on Claire in "Delicate Balance." That's the kind of thing that might draw: a marriage of star and memorable role. One person shows are tricky at best. For every "Shirley Valentine" (which Burstyn played a while) there's ... well, a "Confederate Widow."
But this is another depressing moment in a season with too many.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 7:54pmI read the book and thought it was good but they woudl have to cut out 80% of it to make it a 2 hour play.

Posted: 11/20/03 at 10:44pmAs far as comparing Confederate Widow with Six Dance Lessons goes: The thing with Six Dance Lessons is that Polly Bergen missed every single performance last week due to a leg injury, and a lot of people left rather than stay to watch it with the understudy (even though Kathleen Doyle did a fine job). Before Polly's injury, they were starting to improve in ticket sales due to good word of mouth. I'd imagine they're hopeful that with Polly Bergen now back, they can continue to build their audience.
