On the 29th day, day, day "Caroline" went away, away, away and she didn't come back, back, back, and she didn't come back...

Posted: 8/29/04 at 2:11pmI'm with Rathnait. It's sad that the show is closing but I don't think we need to become suicidal over it, or plan a cult "listening" of the C.D.

There's nothing "cultish" about my listening to the CD. I like it, and at the moment it won't stop running through my head. And really, is listening to the cast recording of a closing show such an extreme thing to do? We're not exactly sacrificing goats here.
And Caroline was filmed in previews, with multiple cameras and everything. This is separate from the filming for the Lincoln Center archives. That's out of the mouth of Margo, who I trust. So take it as you will, ChiChi.

"A show closing is a "tragedy"? It's sad, and it would have been great if it could have run longer, it's a wonderful piece, but it hardly fits the definition of a tragedy for heaven's sake. Please."
I think it is very tragic that a great show like "Caroline" closes so early, before so many people get to experience it, and I don't see why you should care. That is how I feel.

Posted: 8/29/04 at 2:34pmA small tragedy, maybe. Nobody is comparing this to a death in the family or anything.

No, nobody was, including myself. And I don't think that a debate over the degree of how how bad it is that a show is closing is neccessary (that isn't directed at you , Plum).
ANYWAY- "Caroline" is a great show and it's early closing is tragic indeed. I hope it has a long life in regional theaters, etc.

Hey - I LOVED the show. I just think we need to keep life in perspective. And ChiChi, it doesn't bother me at all that people want to put on their cd's at 3:00, so don't lump me in with you.
I suppose I shouldn't expect a theater board to use perspective in regards to vocabulary.

I don't think anyone in this thread was really comparing COC's closing to 9/11 or to killing your father and sleeping with your mother before gouging out your eyes.
Theatre folk are allowed to be dramatic.
And, in context, it is a tragedy that great musicals like COC or Assassins must close when much crap plays on for years and years.

Posted: 8/29/04 at 2:56pmI will most certainly be joining in with the 3pm listening of the cast album. My hallmates will just have to understand and shut up about the loudness.

I agree with all you said, jrb and Rathnait62.
Over at the Little Shop forum, they had a moment of silence at 10:00 PM, August 22nd. Is it really THAT tragic?
Caroline, or Change is an amazing show and does not deserve to close, but I guess it is that time.

I'm the daughter of a maid.
She stands alone where the harsh winds blow:
Salting the earth so nothing grow
too close: but still her strong blood flow....
Underground through hidden veins,
down from stormclouds when it rains,
down the plains, down the high plateau,
down to the Gulf of Mexico,
Down to Larry and Emmie and Jackie and Joe.
The Children of Caroline Thibodeaux.
I'm going for a drink!
