Hey, everyone
Our highschool presently needs a decnet one-act play. As this is usually left to the drama director to decide at the last minute, she's told me that if I can find something really nice we'll use it and I'm jumping on the chance. The regional one act competitions for our drama program at school aren't until springtime, but the drama fundraiser (variety show) this year was a HUGE success, and the department has more money then ever, all of which the director will squander on the current musical production (a performance which goes nowhere but onstage for 2 nights, and I feel is much less diserving of the funding than a competative piece) unless I find soemthing pretty fast, so that I can convince her to set aside most the funding for THAT. So, I'm asking for help
What I need is:
-Any genre, though comedy is HIGHLY preferred (and there's NOTHING wrong with non-sequitor comedy, it took us to states last year, so please get crazy with your suggestions)
-A heavy cast, preferably with a lot of small supporting roles. We have a lot of small-time support-role type students (AKA students no one would ACTAULLY cast were they not shooting for some twisted form of the words 'fairness' that doesn't apply to the major-rold holders; our director for some reason wants to include just about everyone who auditions. We've fought over this.) One to Four major roles are all that's neccessary, and all we can handle.
-under 40 minutes
-Nothing too vulgure etc, it's highschool, and censorship seems to be the 'in' thing.
Thanks you so much! I don't know who I could count on more then the great thespionics who come here!

Posted: 10/3/04 at 10:41amWe did Audience by Michael Frayn for a high school competition once. Definitely a variety of role sizes, it's a one-act, it's really entertaining if you do it well, and we were definitely the favorite at competition. It's actually particularly good for theater competitions, because a theater crowd will be most appreciative of the material.

Posted: 10/3/04 at 3:12pmI've been flaunting this play everywhere, but The Chronicles of Jane: Book Seven is a really good one. It's comedy, and it has/can have a huge ensemble. There are only two or three major parts. It's a little complicated, though, since no one ever leaves the stage. The ensemble plays the set, so they sit in the back and pretend to be the wall, the bed, and the computer desk the entire time. Oh, and, it's fourty-five minutes long.
