There's a RENT timeline on broadway.com. It pretty much explains everything there. No, Jonathon Larson did not COMPLETELY write RENT.

"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster. "Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."

Actually, Clark Gesner did write all of "Charlie Brown" himself. "John Gordon" was a made-up name, since Clark thought it would look like a vanity project if he took credit for all of it. I think he also said that since a lot of the book came from the original cast's improvs (and the comic strip), he used the "John Gordon" name as much as a nod to them. But the show is entirely Clark's.
