I saw BKLYN back in mid November, and I loved their voices but did not like the show at all.
There are many things that bother me about BKLYN but the one I decided to post about tonight is the use of the costumes in the show. I was under the impression that the City Weeds are putting on a show/fairy tale and YES the use what the have around them (i.e. trash) to create everything but once they create it, as an audience member shouldn’t the creation NOT be trash anymore. The trash is the symbol of the real thing. I’m not saying that BKLYN and Paradice should be wearing real gowns or clothes during there MSG performances but perhaps Paradice should not be saying "trash never looked so good" or calling her outfit "Salvation Armani". She's not really wearing trash. This is just one example of this shows poor writing, lack of coherency, and confusion. Anyone care to explain??

that crown made out of chip bags and stuff kinda bother me...
youd think if she was so famous she wouldnt have to wear wonder bread sleeves...

Well, that's the fun thing about Brooklyn..
It's a fairy tale with a bit of truth.
So you have to remember that they are the City Weeds all the time... :)
I LOVE Salvation Armani!

I understand what you are saying, I think. Maybe if they put on the trash costumes, and somehow got them to "transform" into beautiful better looking costumes, because now they are in the story.

I haven't seen the show, but I did notice that in the recording. I personally think that it would stop the momentum of the show to break the 4th wall like that. It's probably something that Ramona came up with during rehearsal and they kept it. It's funny, but it slows down the action and takes us out of what little story there is to begin with.

I found the costumes of the Brooklyn's 'NYC bags' and Paradice's famous 'Salvation Army' symbolizing things about NYC without trying to sugarcoat anything. Guess some people will never understand artistry. *shrugs* :p

They are performing a fairy tale, yes. We, as the audience, are supposed to have 'come across' their sidewalk show that they are about to perform. They use what is around them and morph it into what it needs to be; like afore mentioned and stated in the show "every fairy tale holds a little truth." Paradice & Brooklyn are, at their 'sing-off' dressed beautifully; however, the street performers only have trash bags and caution tape, duct tape, and the like.

What makes it work for me as an audience member is they take it, acknowledge it ("Trash never looked so good..." etc), causing use to accept it, and the show moves forward. I think it was incredibly smart and I can't picture it done any other way and still be successful.

I enjoy almost everything about this show. Sure, it gets a little hokey every now and then, but it still has many great qualities.

Of course, I know others disagree with me on this and that's fine. I'm allowed to like what I want re: One thing I dont understand about BKLYN?

Good comments, Thibodeaux. I also loved the show and cannot understand the disdain for it in some circles.

i really love brooklyn, but my sister who doesnt like it at brought up this point, why, whenever someone mentions a flaw in the story, the excuse that it is a fairy tale always come up. She said just because it is a fairy tale, doesnt mean it can be poor writing.

Had there been actual costumes, there would have been NOTHING keeping my attention on that stage.

In any case, the LAST thing that Brooklyn needs to worry about is creating symbolism through the costume design... Maybe they should focus that creative energy on developing some shred of a plot to hold the songs together.

NiNjACaSANoVA- it really has nothing to do with respecting artistry. BKLYN lacks artistry all over the place. I enjoy the costumes; I just find many parts of the show to be confusing, illogical, and poorly written (this being one example, of many).
I also don’t think as an audience member you should just "accept" everything a show says or does because a performer says it with confidence and then moves on. It makes NO sense that she says that. That's my point. And I was just curious if anyone could explain it to me. And what I thought was true. No one can (except the generic BKLYN response, "it's a fairy tale"- good point Benzy92)

I am sorry. Ramona was incredible. But the show was TRASH.
TRASH.
I hated it and was trapped in the theater rolling my eyes and counting the minutes to the end.
AGONY.

I thought that all of the performers were excellent. But it was hard for them to shine with the ludicrous story and score.
All i could see was TRASH.

Karen's my favorite, her energy really helps makes her part seem bigger.
