Does anyone know if major cities like New York and Los Angeles are premiering RENT any sooner than November 11th? I never really knew why some films did that so I figured I'd ask in case I want to try and get a ticket.
Thanks in advace.

That's unlikely.
Usually the select cities thing happens in December. In order to be eligible for awards consideration, studios are required to play a week long engagement before year end. But it would be financial suicide for all the studios to open everything wide the last week of the year.
So a lot will open in "select cities" to be eligible -- opening wide usually in January/Feb.
PHANTOM tried a slow role out last year and it was a HUGE mistake. I think RENT will probably open wide on November 11th.

My thought is that it will do a preview night or two before November 11th and then roll-out nationwide on Nov. 11th.
The Phantom "roll"-out was a joke. When it was supposedly playing in "selected cities" it was playing everywhere. It was playing here in Denver and we are not usually known to be a "selected city"!
