Are tickets to the general public ever on sale for any major B'way show's opening night? Or are they invite/industry only? Just curious. Would love to experience that but doubt i'll ever have the chance if it's invite only.
Yes, but usuallly not with much notice. They will show up as sold out until two weeks or less before opening when they know exactly how many they need for their vips.
Basically, you just have to keep checking telecharge, a few times a day.
Note: not all shows will release tix to the public.
Do what dramamama says and check Telecharge (or Ticketmaster) frequently. Coming from CA, I knew it was a longshot that I'd ever get to go to an opening night, but I was able to go to the opening for the most recent revival of Annie since it fell during a trip I planned. Basically, I stalked the official show website and Ticketmaster by checking it every morning before I went to work to see if tickets had been released or if an announcement had been made, and I was literally online when the limited tickets went on sale. I checked and they weren't on sale, and then I hit "refresh" and there the seats were-- about fifty seats were offered to the public
You can also look on craigslist and ebay. I was able to buy an opening night ticket for A Steady Raid (Hugh Jackman and Daniel Criag) the night before it opened. Don't think you'll be attending some big party or anything afterwards. That is certainly an invite only. What show are you trying to see on opening night?
@gfaustswa: oh of course I won't be attending any big party or whatever -- I've just always been curious what the experience is like in the house on opening night -- the energy, the electricity, any big names in the audience, etc... and of course, the bragging rights after -- esp. if it's either great, or a complete disasterpiece.
