I agree, if it helps youngins enjoy theatre, then so be it.
"no, it's not becoming a "cult" musical. in my mind a cult musical is one that in it's original form wasnt too popular, but had a loyal, small fanbase that kept the idea of it alive long after it closed."
I really don't remember when Wicked wasn't popular. This is not a cult hit, it is a certified hit in every way, there is no "cult" about it. Now the fans are cult-ish, I'll give you that. I was at the BKLYN closing party and there were a ton of fangirls there as well as a couple of people in Wicked T-shirts there to congratulate Eden I suppose. Wicked fans are getting up there with RENTheads, which to be honest just means annoying.
I love Wicked and will be the first to suggest it to people, but I do try to push other musicals as well. Most out-of-towners who I bring out in NYC who are looking to see a show know of Wicked but I push for something a little more "obscure" that their friends woudn't know about, like DRS or even going to something like Chicago or Spelling Bee with almost guaranteed Lotto/Rushes. Wish some of the Wicked/RENT fans would expand their horizons too.
I agree with everyone else- It is NOT a cult musical. There are many more people who are seeing the show for the first time on any given night than there are people who have witnessed it multiple times.
Personally, I love the show. I love the book. I love the actresses who bring so much life to the two lead roles. But, I hate that it is becoming overhyped. People blab about it all the time! I live in COLORADO and there is not a day that goes by without me seeinga Wicked keychain or shirt somewhere. I'm all for spreading Broadway love, but some people don't get that there is more to Broadway than just a Phantom and a witch.
I like Wicked. I have since it opened. However, now that I've actually seen it, I think it's vastly overhyped and overrated. It was a good show, but it's not the end all and be all of musical theatre, as some people make it out to be.

Yeah, I misunderstood the meaning of cult...I apolgize
The only really annoying thing about Wicked is it's teeny-bopper fanbase. And Norbert Leo Butz's voice on the OCR.
I enjoyed the hell out of Wicked.
Not life changing or whatever, and it wasn't anywhere NEAR my first broadway show, but I had a good old time and I find the cast recording to be very appealing. My mother also enjoyed it, and she's a woman who has been coming to broadway shows for over 50 years. To be honest, we had a good sentimental cry during it. Lovely.
I think a lot of the Wicked backlash on this and other boards comes from the fact that for the first year after it opened (and to some extent now but it has gotten a LOT better) the number of inane, idiotic posts about it were OBSCENE.
I myself thought I was going to gouge someone's eyeballs out with an icepick if I had to read another thread about it, and I LIKED it. So I can imagine the way people who DIDN'T enjoy it felt. Ugh.
