ew York Times review:
She’s pretty terrific. So terrific that this earnest but mechanical musical is more effective and affecting than it was when it yawned open a year and a half ago at the Broadway Theater.
But in the central role of the downtrodden Celie, whose long trudge to emotional fulfillment the musical traces, Fantasia exudes a sweetness, simplicity and honesty that gives it a core of authentic feeling.
She is, to begin with, more naturally suited to the role than LaChanze, who won a Tony for it last year.

When did crying become obnoxious?
Anyway, I saw the show Saturday. Man, it was GREAT. Fantasia is a terrific actress, and her facial expressions really sold the story in a lot of scenes.
Elisabeth was very exciting. I loved her energy during "Push the Buttons."
Natasha was very funny. She's a great Sofia. The scenes between Natasha and Chaz were hysterical.
Everything was just great overall.
My only complaint would be the extended Act 2 opening. It went on a little long, but overall I would give the show an A-.

Just because she won American Idol, doesn't negate what she has brought to THE COLOR PURPLE... Give her a break! I, for one, am thrilled for her!

Why should Oprah go to see Hairspray?
She is one of the producers for The Color Purple and personally asked Fantasia to take over the Celie role - thats why she was there - to support HER show.

"Why should Oprah go to see Hairspray?"
She should have seen it before asking the cast of the film onto her show. Maybe she would have done a better interview and not make uninformed comments like, "I thought Hairspray was about hair."

Oprah called me personally to tell me to post that she is going through a financial issue and can't afford to see shows, she just sees The Color Purple because they don't charge her for orchestra seats.

She was probably joking. Whats all the fascination with Hairspray? Oprah is usually very informed about every guest she has on her show.
Muscleman - you make me laugh. LOL. very very funny. I liked that.

"She was probably joking. Whats all the fascination with Hairspray? Oprah is usually very informed about every guest she has on her show."
No she wasn't joking. She said she never saw the first film or the musical.
The reason Hairspray is mentioned is because she had the cast of the film on this last week and she was ignorant to it's history. She fawned all over John Travolta the entire time. It was a messy show.
