While doing research for a History essay I came across the website for "Orphan Train the Musical." It was directed by Pat Birch so I figured it must have been of decent quality. Could anyone tell me anything about this production. It was part of NYMF. Thanks!

Is it based on the Orphan train book series? I think there were four of them and I remember loving them when I was very young.

Well, I know there was a couple of posters here that talked about shows they attended at the NYMF - maybe a search under that title will bring up some of the reviews.

Although it needed work, it was well done. And it was earnest, but what would you expect from a show about mistreated/orphaned children? Much depended on the performances of the (approx.) eight child cast members. Their talent was uneven, but their work heartfelt.
The story followed the lives of New York orphans taken by train for adoption to the midwest. Some were abused, both physically and sexually. One boy ran away and eventually killed a vagabond in defense. He was caught and sent to trial. Others got lucky--one girl was adopted by an old lady with a sewing business. She worked hard, but was treated well.
The score wasn't particularly memorable and their was an unnecessary, preachy epilogue. It's best chance for an afterlife is with schools and commnunity theaters. No shortage of grandparents to buy tickets for this one!
