Orville Peck’s new LP, “Appaloosa” was released today and he has this really beautiful cover of “Maybe This Time”, for anyone interested.

Lovely. I was...not a fan of the last Cabaret revival but he was an outstanding Emcee, he and Eva together elevated the production so much. Hope he returns to the stage and soon.

First, I always find it intriguing when men interpret songs that were specifically written for a female to sing. I love the opportunity it provides for a change in perspective.

The contrast of Peck's physically masculine appearance (which I can easily conjure, even though his performance is not visually captured), against his vulnerable delivery of the lyrics (Is he alone? Has he been drinking?) is sadly romantic. Is it just me, or does he seem very close to tears at the 3:12 timestamp ("It's gotta happen, Happen sometime...")?

The other interesting thing that caught my ear was his diction at the 2:30 timestamp, "“So-mum-body lum me”  (as opposed to, "So nobody loved me"). Coincidentally, the theme of one of my NPR podcasts this week ("How To Do Everything") was "Broadway Musicals And Best In Show".

The episode begins with one of the hosts describing introducing his young daughter to Anne Margaret singing the title song from the original cast recording of "Bye, Bye, Birdie" (actually, it was the original motion picture soundtrack, not the original cast recording).

Eventually, his young daughter began singing the song around the house. This created some confusion for the host, so they decided to call Anne Margaret to clarify...
