I am suprised many of you are saying LIght in the Piazza.
Its such a great show ... and if anything i think its UNDER hyped. Get outshined by a lot of the others.
I'll say spamalot even though i loved it was overhyped.
wicked **rolls eyes** .. another thread to bash wicked nice. I have to say that is NOT overhyped. ITs hyped for what it is, pure and simple. Its a popular family musical with class. I dont see to be it something its not.

Rather than obsessive fan hype, I am going to mention two shows that got a lot of advertising hype prior to their openings, one living up to it, one not.
Suessical had a lot of hype leading up to when it opened. The year before all the talk was about how great the show was going to be....then it had all of its out of town troubles and the hype was for naught.
Of course, Ragtime was also hyped up a lot prior to its opening. I remember seeing ads in the NYC subways almost a year prior to its opening. I immediately went out and bought the concept recording because I wanted to hear this new musical that was going to take Broadway by storm. The good thing is that Ragtime did turn out to be a wonderful and powerful show.

For me, it's definitely Mamma Mia, Wicked, and Les Miserables.

Posted: 2/20/06 at 12:47pmI'd have to say Wicked. It's a catchy show that has showcased a lot of talent, and I'll be the first to admit that a lot of its songs are on my iPod's Top 25 Most-Played. But I wonder if it's really that well-done and constantly deserves the immense worship it gets.

Now, there are WAY too many people going around saying, "Rent is my life!" and "I know every single word to Rent!" or they start singing "Seasons of Love". Pretty annoying, since I knew about it before the movie was made.

I'd say SPAMALOT.
Although my mom loved it, and I really liked it, I just don't WORSHIP it like a Python fan should, and I don't really think it should have been on Broadway.

I think Light is a great show one of my favorites but soooooo many people are like Light In The Piazza is the first great musical in years, when that is just not true.....
It is the first great "classical" musical. I think the show has a false Hype. The respect it gets by many is getting misinterpruted as hype.
