What show, either currently running or at any time in the past, do you think was overpraised ?
I will start out with Wicked. Yes it was enjoyable & we are glad we saw it but it was,to us,not worth the hype.Many other shows we saw were, to us ,much better & did not have a tenth of its success

Cats was overhyped & mostly was loved by tourists.
I saw it & found it diverting but never understood its long run. Follies closes after a year while CATS seemed to run forever & I like ALW's music. Go figure

Posted: 2/18/06 at 8:43pmMamma Mia. Geez, I did not see the appeal in this show AT ALL. The "storyline", and I use the term extremely loosely, was only a means the songs together. I don't like Abba anyway, so maybe I am a bit biased, and I'll admit the rest of the audience was wildly enjoying the show, but I just don't get it!

I just want to say NOT Wicked. Wicked deserves its hype, you guys are just pissed at its success. Stephen Schwartz f'ing owns your soul.
Hmm, overhyped? West Side Story, I hate that damn show.
What else? Pretty much most of Sondheim's overblown pieces of crap. Although, Sweeney is one of my favorite pieces of theatre, I just think most Sondheim is rubbish.
South Pacific is another show that I hate.
But Light in the Piazza takes the cake, that show can burn in hell.

The Producers. I sat through that show and can't believe it won a tony or that people paid mega-bucks to see it.
Also Spamalot. Its ok but nothing special. I mean its just the movie with a some changes.

ditto to the Producers..based on cast recording and movie... i just don't see why its garnered so much praise,awards etc. Good but not great.
Why do you consider Sondheim overblown? thats usually a description saved for ALW.

I hate Sondheim, I don't like his work. I respect him, but I can't get into his stuff.
ALW on the other hand is one of my favorites. He is most certainly not overblown, and he has saved theatre in my opinion.
No one can make melody like this man, his melodies drive and drive into your head and remain there for years and years. Sondheim's melodies are forgetable, while his lyrics live on.
I don't know about you, but I'll take music over poetry. I love Evita, JCS, Phantom, and Joseph. But I will admit ALW went insane when he wrote Cats, which sucks.
Still, I love ALW. I love all that he has done for theatre. I love his spirit. I love everything about the man! I hate seeing people knock on the mastermind, when he truly does know what he's doing.
Methinks people just find ALW's motives a little squewed.
(By the way, I am happy Spamalot won the Tony, I loved that show.)

What is Schwartz, crap off the sidewalk?
Just because you don't like it, and because you feel the need to be some theatre elitist (obviously), well then, if you want to base your level of respect off of that, then I pity you.
