It was an open call, they had auditions, the most polished and professional are in the finals.
What's the problem?
The one true amateur was that kid they brought back, and he was TERRIBLE...he should be re-kicked off.
MB, my rant is that it gives the people who don't know much about sites like Broadwayworld.com or myspace or any networking sort of site not much to work with.
NYC_or_Bust, why should it matter if the general viewing audience has anything to work with but the performances the contestants give on the show? Presumably a majority of the money the show is going to make will be from these viewers who probably don't know a lot about Broadway or the performers and are going to see it just because they want to see the contestant they watched for however many weeks on tv. Why do those people care if any of the contestants have a prior theatre background or touring experience? I know I don't care and in terms of rooting for any one person, their theatre history has absolutely nothing to do with how I personally think they sound and act. I'm not simply going to vote for or against a contestant based on their previous history, and I seriously doubt most of the viewing audience would either.
Glorified Karaoke is what this is. The reason any of this really matters...even if it is just to me, is because I would much rather vote for someone who I know can handle the role. Perfect example: Austin played the hearthrob of Hairspray, while Derek Played Danny on the Grease tour...while they're both good, my vote would much rather be put to good use considering that Derek knows the role and apparently producers directors and hundreds down the list felt that he was up to the challenge of DANNY (on the tour anyway).
It's not a perfect show. Hell, it's anything but. Considering what there is to work with though, you have to pick your battles. And maybe lildogs was right, maybe in my case I wont be happy till I was on the show as well. I'm not though. And to be honest, I wouldn't even comment if I didn't know Derek personally. Because (to prove my point), these people would just be talented "newcomers". It's the fact that I KNOW Derek played on the tour and have since heard almost ALL of the contestants performing professionally...even "emotional sandy"
Side Note: I know American Idol likes to bring back their wildcards from time to time. But I would be TOTALLY embarassed if I were one of the producers of the GREASE television show who brought back "second chance danny and emotional sandy" (And don't tell me that Marshall, Jacobs, etc were'nt involved with the decision making to bring back two rejects") They were both terrible. At least when Idol brings people back, they don't suck too bad.
I think we have to assume, with the possible exception of the two who were brought back, that Marshall and company believe that all of the finalists could do the show eight times a week. Off camera that had to have been one of the biggest factors in picking the top 12. That is the one and only part of the competition the creative team had complete control over...
I think that documenting the actual audition process that the 'team' would go through to cast a revival of "Grease," sans competition and voting would actually make for great T.V. This competition feels forced and insincere, but I would love to see Marshall take a cattlecall down to 20 and then watch the rounds of auditions that finally produce a Sandy and Danny.
If the contestants are professional, everyone is pissed. If the contestants are inexperienced, everyone is pissed. If the contestants are unknown, everyone is pissed. If the contestants are famous, everyone is pissed. No matter how they handle, people will find a reason to get mad because Broadway has smartly jumped on the reality show phenomenon bandwagon and brought itself into mainstream focus. Good for them! I think everyone who hates the show should simply not watch it, it's not like the producers of the show could win with the naysayers no matter what they do. Folks just gotta make themselves look snooty and above it all. Sounds like they know little about the history of Broadway.
Mountains...molehills...and FAR more intersting than American-watch-me-walk-back-and-forth-and-sing-like-everyone-else-for-months-Idol.

While reading the thread, this saying came to mind and I thought I'd post it.
"You can please some of the people some of the time, but you cannot please all of the people all of the time."
This is just life in the world.
I fell asleep in the middle of the show (I don't think I saw anything after the new people performed), and all the people that I saw in the beginning I thought were terrible in terms of voice quality...I just think they're not that great at singing pop songs...I hated Allie's "I Love Rock 'n Roll."

"I just want to know who is sleeping with who off camera."
YEAH!!!! THAT, and I want to hear them sing real Broadway music. And I want to talk **** about them and what they wore. I'm really not too concerned with the other stuff. I probably won't even go see Grease, so what do I care?
They've never billed this as the Olympics, where the participants can have no professional experience. The premise behind Grease is that America chooses the leads. Simple as that. All this debate is ridiculous over a glorifed Gong Show. Either watch it and enjoy the silliness, or turn the channel. Save the spirited debate for Darfur or healthcare.
"the most polished and professional are in the finals. "
why do you assume this to be the case? The people who have some sort of story they can sell are in the finals and those who had a story but it changed or didn't have a "I grew up in a small apartment with my mom and big dreams" story didn't get kept. Why do we think 2nd chance Danny was brought back- he had a story.
And after last week I think it's clear that "America" is not picking the leads they are picking who they like and then David, Jim and Kathleen are making sure we Americans don't F*ck it all up.
Oh and one last thing- I hope every single one of these folks hires a manager and they work the "Finalist on Grease The One That We Want" angle for the next 10 years. Hell Idol rejects, Miss America winners, everyone is doing it why not them too.

I appreciate the anger over NBC hiding this and revealing that, but.....
I'm just enjoying the level of talent. The finalists all seem capable (as Michael B. mentioned) of carrying 8 shows a week, so at this point it's just a "sit back and enjoy" situation for me. I'm not voting (don't really care)--- just watching the performances. Oh well.
