540 performances. It was a bigger hit than the original. And it also featured Vivienne Segal, who was finally substantially older than Joey.

1952 Playbill
Also the musical revival opened at the Broadhurst Theater and was prompted by the success of the 1950 Studio Recording (the one we have) featuring Vivienne Segal (doing the same role in 1940 as Vera Simpson) and Helen Gallagher as Gladys Bump and of course Harold Lang.

Well, she was almost 15 years older than Kelly. That sounds substantial for me. That seems about right, especially for the scene where she pretends to be his moll.

I was thinking that myself this afternoon. By '52 she was 55 and Harold Lang was 32 for a difference of 23 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is Elaine Stritch (these photos have no notes on the back).

Posted: 12/24/08 at 10:39pmIt's true that in some of the photos of the original production, she looks a good deal younger than she was, so much so that you might think there wasn't intended to be a noticeable age difference between her and Kelly.

Jule Styne merited a whole page and yet all his greatest work was still ahead of him. The show mentioned as next up was "Hazel Flagg" which was a piffle compared to "Peter Pan", "Mister Wonderful", "Bells are Ringing", "Do Re Mi", "Funny Girl" and of course,"Gypsy."
