QMAN03 --- It could win Best Revival??? Based on a two-shot of the leads? Okay.
Personally, I think Patrick is the poster boy for "whitebread pretty." The modern-day Paul Newman (who happened to be Jewish, but still managed to epitomize "whitebread pretty" in his day).
But Patrick still has to win me over as an interesting actor. He's good, he's talented... but I haven't seen him really SPARK yet as an exciting actor... except for his turn in Angels in America... where he played the poster boy for whitebread pretty.

I mean, Barefoot in the Park? Been there, done (and seen) that.
Doesn't ANYONE have any new ideas anymore? It's the same problem in films, too - King Kong, anyone??
Sorry - had to vent. There are tons of new shows out there that deserve to be seen, but the money people are too chickens*** to take a chance. They'd rather churn out old crap that makes money. Pitiful.

No, I for one am not sick of revivals getting exposure. Yes, absolutely there are new works that deserve to be seen and I'm all for that. But I believe that revivals have a place on Broadway as well. There were those of us that missed the shows the first time around (I missed being alive for the original Barefoot by 16 years), and have not seen a live production elsewhere. If it's a good quality revival, I say BRING IT!!
In regards to "churn(ing)out old crap that makes money"--are revivals of plays specifically guaranteeed money makers (with the exception of The Odd Couple of course)? I have a feeling that the producers of Steel Magnolias, The Glass Menagerie & On Golden Pond, just to name a few recent examples, would say that no, revivals of plays are not guarantees.
Also, call me crazy, but it seems that the hating of revivals only applies to shows that are not "serious drama." I dont recall these types of posts, lamenting "why oh why is Virginia Woolf (or Long Day's Journey into Night or Julius Caesar or The Glass Menagerie or Streetcar, etc) being revived? Been there, done that." Why do revivals of dramas get a pass, but revivals of comedies or "fluff" (Steel Magnolias, On Golden Pond) get the cold shoulder?
If you're not interested in a revival of Barefoot, dont see it, but there's at least one person out there who does!

I think you're seeing more revivals today because there is more to revive. Don't forget that the American musical hasn't really been around that long in the grand scheme of time. A hundred years-ish. We now have twice as many shows to revive today as they did 50 years ago.
Same thing with film.
But if you look back into the past, you'll see revivals have been going on a long time.
Now... that said... I think we are in great need of new works and ideas today. I think because we have a larger "library" to fall back on, we're doing just that, and FAR too often. Nothing wrong with revivals (at least the GOOD ones), unless they are sapping up the time, energy and attention of creating something new. Then I get uncomfortable about it too.
