PLAYS FOR THE PLAGUE YEAR

As I recover from my first bout with COVID (unpleasant, but mild, don't worry), I look back on the first preview of Suzan-Lori Parks' new piece, which I saw last week at Joe's Pub.

See my thoughts here

I had some technical issues with the show too, which I didn't really feel like touching on in this video - namely I think the show is too long, and not all the actors are on the same page, tonally. But it was the 1st preview.

I'm more interested in exploring this question of what the purpose of COVID-centric theatre is. Like I said in the video, I think it really depends (I think Sweatshop Overlord was much better, for example, because she always returned back to the hyper-specific angle of the sewing group, even when she was touching on the major current events).

Anyone else see the show yet? If so, what are your thoughts? I'm curious if people experienced what Parks was going for with the "collective coping tactics" angle.

I have not seen it, but your link does not seem to work.

I hope you feel better, soon, though. smiley

Thank you on both counts! Looks like I accidentally had it set on "Private." Just fixed it!
