I found while looking at the 1995 Annual Report:
"The division continues to develop new ideas for its next musical, which will be launched in the spring of 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street, New York.
Disney Theatrical Productions plans to stage one new Broadway show each year after 1997. It has a variety of projects under consideration, including a new version of Aida with music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice; King David, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice; Elton and Tim's Lion King; and Pocahontas, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. "
Anyone else know this?
I heard it a while ago, and I would love to see it on Broadway. It is my third favorite Disney film behind Beauty and The Little Mermaid, and well lets hope it could have been better than the latter.
Being that the report was from almost 14 years ago, I'd gamble to say that whatever they did come up is all but a long memory by now. Things change and I'd see Disney doing something with Pirates, Mulan or Enchanted with today's audiences.

If they tried to do something with Pirates, they'd lose their shirts.
Mmmm... shirtless pirates...
don't even get me started on this...

Don't we already have shirtless sailors in Mermaid?
Ah, now BWW discovers exactly why it is that Schmerg_The_Impaler is crazy enough to like Mermaid...
(Seriously, though, Pirates the musical would be the worst idea since "Thirteen." I'm hoping my misguided pun on 'losing their shirts' came through...)
