POTO: reverse Oedipal overtones?

I saw the movie of POTO with my parents a couple of weeks ago, and when it ended my mom said, "You might think this is crazy, but did you get the feel...?"
I knew exactly what she was thinking, and finished the thought for her: "Oedipal complex?"
"So I'm not the only one who thinks that," she said. When we mentioned it to my dad, he thought we were nuts.
Has anyone else gotten that impression from the movie, or are my mom and I *really* nuts?

Totally! christine sort of mistakes the phantom for her father, or at least father-figure. it's weird and unsettling.

I think that's one of the big themes of the show. The Phantom manipulates her lack of a father figure because he's in love with her.

There is a lesson to be learned for the fellas; the way to woo a lady is not to make her think you're her father.

"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad

Damn.
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"
