Dave Malloy's "Preludes" a time and mind bending exploration of Serge Rachmaninoff's 3 year exile in non-creativity, works and succeeds on multiple levels. Interpolating Mr. Malloy's own songs and lyrics (some utilizing Rachmaninoff themes, some complete Rachmanioff works) as performed by a very gifted cast including the solid bass-baritone Joseh Keckler as the great Russian basso-profundo Chaliapin, the wonderfully illustrative piano performnces by Or Matias as Rachmaninoff, Gabriel Ebert as the time shifting heart of the show “Rach” with equal kudos to Chris Sarandon playing multiple characters and Nikki M. James as Rachmaninoff’s wife Natalya and Elisa Davis as Rachmaninoff’s saviour (the hypo-therapist Dahl) is quite the tour de force. This show will clearly not work for everyone (being a member of Mensa might help) . Now if you are looking for a straight bio-narrative of this great man, well forget it. If you can go with the flow of a phantasmagorical amusement park ride with exceptional intelligence, sensitivity and spirit, then by all means, see this show before it closes later in August.
