Actually jv92, the total proceeds for domestic and international are over 28 million with openings scheduled in March through late April in many other countries.
The total take of all international release combined with DVD release should more than pay back the investment of $45 million which will make Universay pretty happy.
From the Universal reports of domestic box office it sounds like they are OK with the results. You have to remember that this was never going to be a block buster like an action flic or a KING KONG.
It was never intended to be nor was it expected to be. In this day and age, no studio is going to go into a movie musical with that expectation and this one was done as a retro kind of thing so it wouldn't attract the same audience as Chicago or Moulin Rouge (or even RENT) anyway. And it was never supposed to be of the same ilk. It was SUPPOSED to be stagey and old fashioned.
While the reviews were mixed (not all bad as some have reported) they were far from horrible across the board and audiences that have reported on it seemed to have liked it a lot.
I hope it will do well in DVD sales. It will give others a chance to see what they couldn't see on the Broadway stage with most of the original cast members.
