I was just saying to myself that I had to buy this today when I went to the store. Now, I will have to wait for it to come out all remastered and stuff.

Magruder, thanks for the info on Jill O'Hara. I didn't realize she was still singing. Is this the album you're talking about? Amazon has it released in 93, 12 years ago. Out of print and the one and only copy on sale there is for $84.99!

The first CD of PROMISES PROMISES was on the Ryko label. They got the rights to all of the old movie soundtracks that were on United Artists label and also had the rights to the U.A. cast albums of which they only released 2 on CD: PROMISES PROMISES and SUGAR. (Collectors were hoping for ANYA and the off-broadway HOUSE OF FLOWERS.) These came out in 1997 and Ryko had a 5 year window on the rights but Ryko was disbanded and all of their releases were deleted.

Question: from the graphic it looks like this release will be by Varese-Sarabande. I had heard DRG was doing it (along with other U.A. cast albums).

I'm glad Varese is getting back into OCR's - a field they pretty much abandonned when Bruce Kimmel left them. They reissued HENRY SWEET HENRY on CD and I still see it in stores (though for how much longer?) If you have never heard this Bob Merrill score get it while you can. Once it goes it too will command big bucks in the collector market.

Alot of posters have been questioning the cover artwork and it has been altered.

The first picture is the original Lp release from 1968 on United Artists Records. The second one is the Rykodisc CD release from 1997.

I always figured PROMISES PROMISES would get reissued because the show was a big hit by a well known composer and it is on that is still regularly staged. Now let's see if V/S brings back SUGAR.

I would caution anyone to consider the above before investing large $ from your CD buying budget to get an out-of-print title.

The same happened with LI'L ABNER, YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN, and the original CHICAGO. These were all issued on CD fairly early on then went out-of-print and commanded huge prices on E-bay: $150 for YAGMCB!!! Then the reissues came along.

On the other hand if the show is an obscure flop grab it while you can. We'll never likely see WHOOP UP reissued. Or KWAMINA. Or LEGS DIAMOND. WHOOP UP sold at auction not too long ago for over $200.

Speaking of Sugar, I just got a copy of the London version entitled Some Like It Hot, starring Tommy Steele. It's probably not as good as the original (just arrived today so I haven't listened yet); London cast recordings usually aren't. But it cost $8 plus shipping from Amazon as opposed to $49 for a copy of Sugar. A much cheaper way to hear the songs, though not by the Broadway cast.

I love this score. It's nice to see it re-released but would be nicer to have a newer version with stronger voices. Bring this baby back!

i love bacharach too. i have (almost) all of his recordings. the soundtracks to "what's new ****cat?", "after the fox", "casino royale" and "butch cassidy & the sundance kid". i totally ripped my mom's dionne warwick collection and i also have that boxed set that came out a couple of years ago. the man's a genius and his music is so infectious. you can't leave hal david behind though he's a witty lyricist: "what do you get when you kiss a guy? you get enough germs to catch pneumonia and after you do he'll never phone ya..." PRICELESS!

WORD, Marquise! I have so many Bacharach / David favorites - it's hard to pick one. I think my top picks might be "This Guy's in Love With You", "The Look of Love", "Close To You", and "I Say A Little Prayer". "What the World Needs Now" is not too shabby, either! :)

The title track from "Promises, Promises" would probably be my favorite song from the show.

her sister jenny o'hara replaced her as "fran" in "promises, promises". also found out that lorna luft made her broadway debut in this show and was the last actress to play the part on Broadway before the show closed.
