Paper Mill's Cinderella - Colorblind Casting

I just got a direct mailing from Paper Mill Playhouse advertising their upcoming production of Cinderella. The dreamy Paolo Montalban (Manjiro in the recent Pacific Overtures) is the Prince. Three cheers to Paper Mill for thinking outside the box and making a bold casting move. (Suzzanne Douglas is the Fairy Godmother but that role has been cast creatively before, with Eartha Kitt playing the role at City Opera). But I can't recall a non-white guy ever playing the Prince before. I'm dusting off my NJ Transit train schedule.

I'm happy Paulo is in the role. FYI - he was on the tour and also in Disney's version that was on TV with Brandy as Cinderella.

My sister was only 9 when that movie came out and even she wondered how a white man and a black woman could produce an Asian child.

No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.

The Disney movie had an Asian son, a caucasian king and a black queen. Ahead of its time. Disney also did a color blind Annie with a Caucasian Warbucks getting together with his black assistant at the end. WOW...what a novel concept. Love among the races!

re: Paper Mill's Cinderella - Colorblind Casting

I did several shows with Paolo back in the early 90's and he is a joy to work with - sweet, funny, kind, and easy on the eyes - I'm very happy for his success (he was in As You Like It in CP this summer, also)
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

was your sister totally accepting of the pumpkin becoming a coach, the fairy godmother, cindy's ragged dress turning into a gown? in a fairytale where rodents speak & dance, anything goes.

Elphaba, that's what was funny about it. My sister immediately suspected Whoopi Goldberg had an affair and Victor Garber wasn't his real father. Probably an argument for why she shouldn't have been watching soaps with my mom, but it was just funny that she made got this idea from a Disney movie.
