It is hard to know why anyone would say that Alonzo Mann "didn't testify in the case," i.e. 1913. Several office boys at the NPCo were summoned, and all testified, including Alonzo. Even Oney's book refers to this fact [p. 279].

The odd thing is, if his 1982 Deposition is to be believed, that he went back to work the following Monday [April 28]. He claimed, in 1982, that he told his parents what he had seen that Saturday, that Jim Conley had threatened to kill him, etc., and yet they let their son GO BACK TO WORK (while Conley was still there)!

Actually, Alonzo was interviewed by several detectives prior to Trial about his whereabouts and he specifically said that he met his mother at the promised time, around 12 noon, and enjoyed the day's festivities. He had left the factory around 11:30 am and was not seen by Leo's secretary Hattie Hall, nor visiting Corrie or Emma [all of whom also testified].

In the nearly 70 intervening years (1913-1982), there is no independent evidence that he ever told anyone "what he really saw."

His wife had died in 1979, and by 1982 he was old and vulnerable, with a pacemaker for his heart. His only child has died in infancy. For some reason, he had received an honorary State Police Certificate from Governor Lester Maddox [both had been owners of restaurants].

Hey now, I was the one insisting all along that there is a chance he isn't innocent. I admit that we don't know.

And when I said Alonzo Mann didn't testify at all, I meant that he didn't testify that he saw Conley carrying the body during the trial.

Yes, I know Oney's book isn't a novel--I confused the two terms.

Ziggy: Parade never outright guesses at the truth, but it HEAVILY makes Frank out to be an American Dreyfus. Even though I lean towards Frank being innocent, it's too much for even me. It wasn't as simple as "Frank was convicted because he was Jewish."

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
