I liked Judy as Fosca; but then again, it is Judy Kuhn, so...

Helen's portrayal sounds very young, girlish, and naive. She isn't bad though.
But Marin's portrayal is beautiful, mature, and in control.
Your description of their performances couldn't be more on spot. I was trying to put into words how I felt about their Claras, but you said it the best.
Spork, I feel the same way. Donna Murphy's performance as Fosca is haunting in ways that no one has even been able to come near. I honestly can't even think of any actress that I would like to see in the role now. Laura Benanti said Fosca is one of her dream roles, if she were to be directed to give a performance like the one she is giving in GYPSY right now, then by all means, she should give it a go. She's good friends with Murphy so perhaps Murphy can give her a few tips. Then again when I think of roles I'd love to see Benanti play, it is Clara and not Fosca the one that comes to mind, but she could surprise us all.

Posted: 6/29/08 at 3:29amLaura isn't necessarily too young, it might add quite a tragic layer to see this younger woman going through that kind of illness and all the awful things she lived through with her former husband. It'd also add a layer of naivette during the "Flashback" sequence. I just feel Laura is a Clara, not a Fosca, but also Sam Mendes didn't think she was right for Louise...and we all know how wrong he was.

I do have disagree about Shea and Michael Ball as Georgio, tho
I have listened to the Broadway and London recordings many many times. I agree that Donna Murphy is PERFECT as Fosca
But I think Michael Ball *really* captured Georgio perfectly as well. His Georgio had dignity and yet so much innate goodness, as well as a certain youthful naivete. It was easy to see why Fosca was so drawn to him -- for his kindness, and genuine respect for her as a person. The spoken parts of the London recording are a wonderful bonus, especially his part with Fosca's cousin at the end
I was lucky enough to see his performance as well, and I can't imagine anyone being more perfectly cast as Georgio
