I remember hearing about the possibility of it being filmed a couple of years ago... Was it?? What with Shrek just being released maybe they're still waiting to release it?

It was never filmed.
The show posted a closing notice before the intended filming date, and they never rescheduled. I definitely would've bought that, too!
I saw it right around Christmas of '08 and I remember seeing a notice about the show being filmed when I was buying tickets.
A couple of people tried to do it from the audience, but Patti yelled at them. I was there.
Perhaps it was filmed - as a lot of Broadway shows are, for archival purposes only. I've been to many shows were notices where posted about it being film, and seeing the cameras, only to have ushers say it's for archives only.
It actually was in the process of being filmed when the HVAC unit fell and crushed the camera man.

Okay, I have a friend who was in the production and here's his version of what happened:
The show WAS supposed to be taped for television but the enconomy tanked and box office revenue slipped dramatically, forcing the show to close earlier than anticipated. That negated the taping. There were hopes that the production would move to London and it might be taped there, but that fell apart, too.
It's sad because if any show in recent years should have been preserved for generations to come, it was GYPSY.
Yes, filming was scheduled for commercial release. As previously mentioned - it was marked out once the producers decided to close earlier than expected.
If you can come up with an educational reason to watch it, the Lincoln Center Library filmed it both at Encores! and on Broadway, according to the NYPL catalog.
And yes, it was indeed filmed and a handful of performances exist out there. None officially but full performances videos of LuPone in GYPSY do exist.
There are several audience filmed versions, but sadly it was never filmed professionally other than for archival purposes. If you can think of a good reason go see it a the NYPL

the archive performance wasn't their best, i had saw the show before that performance it was flawless, for some reason every1s performance was over the top for the archive one...
