Just wanted to let everyone know that Patty Duke is starring as
Mama Rose in GYPSY in Washington State. The show runs from Sept 20 to the first weekend in Nov. 03....
I am enclosing the link www.spokanecivictheatre.com

BTW both the local papers gave Ms. Duke very good reviews.
The Spokesman-Review said this about Ms. Duke...."Patty Duke is absolutely terrific as Mama Rose, the mother of all stage mothers"......

Patty Duke sings? I didn't know that.

She sang the classic "Funny Little Butterfies" in BILLIE.
It's the original version of "I Can Hear the Bells".

Patty was in OKLAHOMA on Broadway last year and she was also in the Reprise version of FOLLIES as Phyllis. Friends who saw her as Phyllis said she was great evn though she massacred everything she had to sing.

rumor has it she has lyric-memory challenges...not a good sign for Mama Rose

I hope she does better than poor, miscast Bernadette Peters

I am hoping that Patty Duke replaces Bernadette Peters in the Broadway version of GYPSY. Do you think the producers are listening re: re: re: Patty Duke in GYPSY
As I said in my first post, read the reviews of Ms. Duke in the Washington (State) newspapers....

Given how people flocked to the box office and sold out the run of Oklahoma! for three years after Patty joined the cast, I bet she can pretty much write her own ticket for Gypsy after Bernadette leaves.

Well I dont think anyone can blame the closing of OKLAHOMA on Patty Duke. It was running almost a year when she took over, it is a play that most people have seen in one form or another, the winter was one of the worst we had in a long time, when tickets to new shows like HAIRSPRAY and THE PRODUCERS are available, why see an old show like OKLAHOMA and since there was little or no publicity surrounding Ms. Duke coming into OKLAHOMA, I think those are the reasons the show closed not MS. Duke (who BTW received good reviews from all the newspapers).

Can Patty Sing? What a question! Master, although you are correct about FUNNY LITTLE BUTTERFLIES (simply the most under-rated song from the 60's) I don't think Little Anna really hit her stride until a few years later with her recording of WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE, and of course, it goes with out saying, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE from VOTD.

PEACE.

Patty was robbed of the Tony. She was better than Marissa.

No, Neely was robbed of her possible TONY for CALL ME, DARLING...just because she got a little "drunk" and took some "dolls" and tried to "choke" her understudy!

I mean, come on!...

Actually, I think the show was "Tell Me, Darling." We saw it with the understudy and it was a lovely evening nevertheless.

That's it TELL ME darling...yes what a show ..and the understudy went on to play Nora Bayes in "Moonlight Girl" and Neely hosted the short-lived but never forgotten TV show,"The Neely O'Hara show"...oh, and remember, the classic double LP "Neely at Philharmonic Hall"..what a show!

Ain't it the truth....but really had Neely stayed in "Hit The Sky" she would have won a Tony for that....unfortunately, Helen Lawson tied a can to her tail.

Helen Lawson

That was a star...Wheneveer I see Bernadette singing "I'll plant my own Tree"..

it just makes me so upset!

Why does Bernadette have to do ALL of Helen Lawson's old shows!

I was just reading in another post that people were thinking about who should replace Bernadette Peters when she leaves GYPSY. And I once again suggest that Patty Duke takes over when Bernadette leaves. Ms. Duke received very good notices from the Washington State newspapers. Some people I know are going to see it, I will post what they had to say when they return..

At least she would have a built-in understudy with her cousin Cathy.
